St Mary's College, Ipswich is seeking a First Nations mentor. The successful applicant will be proactive in ensuring engagement and supporting learning progress for our first nations students through exemplary communication and interpersonal skills.
**Key Responsibilities**: Typical duties performed may include, but are not limited to:
- Mentoring Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students through being an approachable presence within the school and meeting with the students regularly;
- Liaising with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students' families to strengthen connections with the College community, through support of the College Open day, transition to secondary programs and regular contact with families;
- Encouraging recognition and celebration of cultural days and events such as NAIDOC week, Sorry Day, Close the Gap campaign, Reconciliation week etc. in order to deepen cultural understanding and awareness in the wider college community;
- Facilitate opportunities for students to deepen their cultural understanding and identify ways and means for students to share and raise cultural awareness with the wider college community
- Explore social issues with students that impact Indigenous Australians and seek ways to raise awareness within the school community;
- Seek opportunities for Indigenous students in relation to scholarships, traineeships and further educational institutes;
- Liaise with BCE support personnel and their network to support ATSL students engagement and attendance;
- Support students in classrooms to enhance literacy and numeracy outcomes;
- Developing networks of agencies which can assist the holistic needs of Indigenous learners (education, health, justice, family support etc);
- Guide the College community in developing and implementing a Reconciliation Action Plan;
- Provide assistance to teachers to enhance the teaching and learning of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and culture.
To be eligible to be considered for this role you will:
- hold a Paid Employee Positive Notice Blue Card prior to commencement;
- be eligible to work in Australia for the duration of the appointment; and
- have a commitment to and understanding of the ethos and traditions of Catholic Education.
