Primary objective

The Senior Policy Officer manages a team that provides high-level advice on the Northern Territory Government's legislative

reform agenda, delivers consultation and community engagement with stakeholders in relation to planned reforms and is

responsible for the management and achievement of a portfolio of critical, strategic legislative reform projects that support

programs and services delivered by the Department across the Northern Territory.

Key duties and responsibilities

1. Deliver strategic advice and preparing correspondence, reports and briefings to Cabinet, the Minister, Chief Executive Officer

(CEO) and Agency Senior Executives around law reform matters.

  1. Conduct inter-jurisdictional research, and consult, liaise and collaborate with Commonwealth, State and Territory Departments

to inform the Northern Territory legislative reform agenda.

3. Undertake consultation and engagement with stakeholders from all sectors and located in urban, rural and remote locations

across the Northern Territory in relation to law reform proposals.

  1. Manage a portfolio of strategic legislative reform projects that govern Territory-wide programs and services delivered by the

Agency and assist in the management of legislative amendment processes.

5. Manage a team that undertakes research, planning, development and implementation of legislation on a range of issues that

impact the Department's portfolios.

Selection criteria

Essential

1. Deliver strategic advice, demonstrating strong conceptual and analytical skills, and the ability to critically interpret, assess and

evaluate information and complex legislation.

2. Demonstrated ability to apply sound research and judgement, in a complex and politically demanding environment.

3. Ability to direct and project manage a portfolio of complex law reform projects, with tight timeframes.

  1. Ability to design and conduct sensitive consultation and community engagement processes for legislative reforms that include

delivery of forums, presentations and workshops across the Northern Territory, in complex stakeholder and service delivery

environments.

  1. Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills (both written and oral), with the ability to effectively interact and

communicate at Ministerial, CEO and Senior Executive levels and collaborate and negotiate outcomes with internal and external

stakeholders and agencies.

  1. Ability to work as a senior member of a team, demonstrating high levels of personal performance, proactive, innovative and

practical approaches, and the ability to manage significant pressures, multiple challenges and demands, to achieve outcomes.

  1. Ability to supervise junior team members, offering guidance and constructive input to enhance their skill development.

Desirable

1. Tertiary qualification in human services, law, social sciences, public policy or a related field.
