Position Overview

The Leading Hand Carpenter plays a critical role in the successful delivery of our projects. You'll be hands-on with the tools while also managing a small team, coordinating trades, solving problems on the fly, and ensuring projects are completed to the highest standards.

This role is ideal for a qualified carpenter with proven experience in renovations, extensions, and remedial works who is looking to step up into leadership and grow with a high-performing team.


Key Responsibilities
On-Site Leadership & Supervision
  • Lead and manage a small team of carpenters and apprentices
  • Oversee and coordinate daily site activities, ensuring safety and quality standards
  • Manage subcontractors and liaise directly with trusted trades
  • Take ownership of the site and keep projects running smoothly and on schedule
Carpentry & Construction Works
  • Perform all aspects of high-end carpentry on renovations, extensions, and remedial projects
  • Install structural and architectural elements to specification
  • Read and interpret construction drawings, engineering documents, and specifications
  • Carry out remedial works with precision and care
Problem-Solving & Decision-Making
  • Identify and resolve issues as they arise
  • Make informed decisions on the fly to maintain project momentum
  • Provide input on construction methodologies and sequencing
Communication & Client Interaction
  • Liaise professionally with clients, suppliers, and consultants
  • Represent the McDowell Building brand in a respectful and polished manner
  • Report directly to the Director and provide regular updates on project progress

Skills & Experience
Required
  • Qualified Carpenter (Certificate III in Carpentry or equivalent)
  • Minimum 5+ years post-apprenticeship experience in residential building
  • Strong background in renovations, extensions, and remedial works
  • Proven ability to lead a small team and coordinate trades
  • Competent in interpreting architectural drawings and engineering details
  • Own tools and reliable transport
  • White Card and relevant site safety training
Preferred
  • Previous experience in architectural or high-end builds
  • Exposure to managing multiple trades and complex site conditions
  • Understanding of HIA/VBA standards and best practices
  • First Aid/CPR certification (advantageous)
