Primary objective

To provide clinical expertise in anaesthesia, acute pain and perioperative medicine at Alice Springs Hospital, Alice Springs and

Barkly regions, and fringe areas of Western Australia and South Australia.

Context statement

Alice Springs Hospital is the principal tertiary hospital within the region and provides a broad range of referral services in all

specialty areas to Alice Springs and Remote regions.

The Anaesthetics team support patients undergoing procedures and surgeries for General Surgery, Obstetrics, Gynaecology,

Diagnostic radiology procedures in children, Dental and Maxillo Facial procedures, Orthopaedic surgery, ENT, Ophthalmology,

Vascular surgery, Paediatric Urology and Orthopaedics, Urology, and labour analgesia in maternity, Insertion of and maintenance

of access for Dialysis, Central Venous access and services for acute pain.

Key duties and responsibilities

1. Provide specialist-level anaesthesia, acute pain and peri-operative medicine services to the Alice Springs Hospital.

  1. Provision of anaesthesia services to Tenant Creek Hospital as well as Surgical Outreach visits.
  2. Participate in the development of the discipline of Anaesthesia in the Northern Territory (NT) including research, continuous

education and training of medical, nursing and paramedical personnel.

4. Provide emergency after-hours care and consultancy service on a roster basis alongside other members of the Department of

Anaesthesia and Perioperative Medicine.

  1. Participation and supervision of Safety and Quality Improvement activities such as clinical audit, morbidity and mortality

reviews, as well as revision and review of policies, guidelines and procedures that align with national and international

recommendations.

  1. Participate in relevant hospital committees and in other administrative duties as required from time to time and provide advice

to the Director of Medical and Clinical Services on matters relating to Anaesthetics and Pain Medicine.

Selection criteria

Essential

1. Eligible for Specialist registration with the Medical Board of Australia.

2. Specialist qualifications (Fellowship with the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA) or equivalent with

at least 3 years of full-time service in medical practice as a Specialist.

  1. Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills, and the ability to interact positively in a cross-cultural work

environment, as a team member and the ability to work effectively as part of the multi-disciplinary team

4. Demonstrated commitment to high quality patient care.

5. A strong interest and a commitment to providing and improving healthcare for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

6. Evidence of commitment and participation in; continuing education, teaching, research and Safety and Quality activities.

7. Proven ability to manage self and others, monitor performance, manage change and develop policy with an understanding of

EEO and WHS principles and policies.
