About the Role

BHP is generating large amounts of data from different sources and envisioning to scale value and impact through delivery of emergent AI solutions. Reporting to the Manager Data Platforms, as a Principle Data & AI Platforms Engineer you will play a hands-on role providing expertise in design, implementation and continuous improvement of BHP's core Data & AI Platforms and Technologies.

These platforms provide re-usable, scalable and sustainable capabilities enabling project teams and customer groups to focus on solving business problems, optimise processes and deliver positive impact using Data, ML and AI techniques.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate across Data, Visualisation, AI and Governance platform teams to engineer seamless data and analytics experience to users. You will be working across key technologies providing an integrated platform offering - Snowflake, Power BI, AWS SageMaker, Collibra, MS Purview.
  • Focus on scaling out of emergent AI/ML, GenAI and Agentic platform capabilities - e.g. AWS Agent Core, AI Foundry, Snowflake Cortex, Copilot Studio, Bedrock, OpenAI, Graph databases, AI Catalogue/Governance.
  • Assist in the delivery of use-cases by providing platform knowledge, design and implementation support to delivery team (business, technology or project).
  • Lead platform automation, cost optimisation, monitoring and enabling new platform feature releases.
  • Engage with wide variety of engineering, analytics and user groups to enable them to leverage platform capabilities following self-service, start-here experiences (showcases, demos, labs, reference examples).
  • Define, communicate and maintain standards, frameworks, guidelines and best practice engineering guides for platform offerings.
  • Participate in Agile ways of working, contributing to sprint ceremonies, planning, team-routines and rituals.
  • Pro-actively collaborate with Architecture, Cyber Security, Data Strategy, Data Privacy & Compliance, Applications, Cloud & Network and other technology teams (Integration, ServiceNow, ERP, Microsoft 365) ensuring Platform capabilities integrated into the broader landscape and addressing enterprise concerns.

About You

You are a hands-on learner who is eager to continuously learn and develop your engineering skills across modern data and AI platforms. You stay up to date with evolving technologies and enjoy contributing to the success of projects through your technical abilities, curiosity, and team-first approach.

  • 5+ years in hands-on data/cloud engineering or data platform engineering orientated roles with primarily cloud-based PaaS and SaaS platforms.
  • 5+ years professional exposure to modern/cloud data centric platforms and infrastructure - including enterprise data warehouses/data lakes, master data, integration platforms, data virtualisation, reporting/data warehousing and advanced analytics platforms.
  • 2+ years' experience and expertise in source control and CI/CD practices.
  • Hands-on experience with common data science libraries, languages, and tools (e.g. Jupyter Notebooks, TensorFlow, R-scripting, Python, Pands etc).
  • Exposure and understanding of emerging AI/ML/GenAI and Agentic technologies (e.g. Snowflake Cortex, AWS Agent Core, AI Foundry, Copilot Studio, Bedrock, OpenAI)
  • Experience and knowledge of general AI and Data science practices - including common algorithms and AI/ML Ops, Prompt engineering, RAG.
  • Experience in creation of data platform related patterns and/or engineering best practices/guides for wide user consumption
  • Understanding and application of data integration, warehousing, data mesh, AI/ML and Agentic concepts, patterns, techniques and principles.
  • Strong experience working within an Agile, DevOps and Product Team mindset.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, guiding and influencing business and technical stakeholders across the organisation.
