The Department of Education's Risk and Assurance Directorate is establishing a Principal Consultant (Level 7) pool for permanent and fixed term, full-time and part­time vacancies which may arise up until September 2026. Appointments may be offered at any time for vacancies that commence during this period.
Context
The Department of Education's strategic plan outlines the commitment for every child to enjoy a high quality of education. This is an education underpinned by excellence in teaching, quality leadership and pathways from Kindergarten to Year 12 to meet the needs of the learner in preparing them to take the next step into the world of work or further education.

The Professional Standards and Conduct Division is responsible for the delivery of a range of integrated functions and oversees Standards and Integrity Directorate, Risk and Assurance Directorate, Legal and Legislative Services Directorate, Parent Liaison Office and the Screening Unit.

The Risk and Assurance Directorate delivers high-level audit and risk management expertise with an emphasis on a quality audit and risk management program that addresses organisational accountability and supports a broad client need across the Department. The Directorate's services include:

  • provide assurance to the Director General and the Audit and Risk Committee that the Department's financial and operational controls are operating in an efficient, effective, economical and ethical manner
  • assist management in improving the Department's business performance
  • provide a risk advisory function with its focus on assisting staff to manage risks effectively
  • undertake a governance function for the Department's externally available policies and delegations.

The Roles
The positions to fill from this process are:

Principal Consultant – Policy Governance (Level 7)
As Principal Consultant – Policy Governance, you will lead the strategic development, implementation, and review of the Department's policy governance framework and delegation instruments. This role provides high-level advice and oversight to ensure policy governance processes are compliant with legislative obligations and aligned with the Department's strategic objectives.

You will work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders to manage approvals, support policy owners, and promote best practice in policy development and implementation. Your work will enhance consistency, transparency, and accountability in policy governance across the Department.

Principal Consultant – Audit and Analytics (Level 7)
As Principal Consultant – Audit and Analytics, you will lead the delivery of complex internal audits and the integration of data analytics into the Department's assurance activities. Reporting to the Manager, Audit and Assurance, you will provide expert advice on audit planning, execution, and reporting, while identifying strategic risks and opportunities for improvement.

You will play a key role in enhancing the Department's audit methodologies, supporting evidence-based decision making, and leveraging data insights to strengthen governance and performance. The role involves extensive stakeholder engagement, oversight of audit projects, and high-level contributions to the Audit and Risk Committee.

Principal Consultant – Policy Governance (Level 7)

  • Extensive experience in the development of policy frameworks and governance processes and compliance with public sector legislative requirements.
  • Demonstrated experience working in a client service approach and highly collaborative and stakeholder focused experience in the provision of advice and guidance to staff at all levels in the organisation.
  • Highly developed oral and interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to undertake high-level consultations and collaborations.

Principal Consultant –
Audit and Analytics
(Level 7)

  • Extensive experience in and understanding of the planning, conduct and reporting of complex audit and assurance reviews aligned to contemporary audit and assurance concepts, techniques, and management practices.
  • High level of knowledge and experience in the provision of advice and guidance at all levels in relation to internal audit and corporate governance frameworks, policies, and techniques.
  • Highly developed communication and interpersonal skills including the ability to undertake high-level consultations, collaborations, and negotiations.
