As Chair of the Animal Ethics Committees at the University of Melbourne, you'll play a pivotal role in ensuring ethical and compliant animal research practices. You'll lead five Animal Ethics Committees, guiding their operations and decision-making processes. Your expertise will be crucial in advising senior University executives on risks and opportunities related to animal research, contributing to the University's commitment to responsible scientific practices.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Lead ing Ethical Compliance: Ensure AECs operate in accordance with legislation, the Australian Code, and University policies.

  • Chair ing Committee Meetings: Conduct meetings impartially, facilitating consensus decision-making and timely review of submissions.

  • Provid ing Strategic Advice: Advise University management on matters affecting animal welfare and AEC operations.

  • Foster ing Collaboration: Facilitate communication across AECs and work with stakeholders to improve animal care and use processes.

You may be a great fit if:

You are an experienced leader with a postgraduate qualification in a relevant discipline, possessing strong committee management skills, an understanding of administrative law, and the ability to navigate complex organisational structures while exercising sound judgment on sensitive issues.

You may also:

  • Have a postgraduate qualification in a relevant discipline with substantial experience in chairing an Animal Ethics Committee or similar regulatory decision-making body .

  • Possess proven leadership skills in committee management and conflict resolution.

  • Demonstrate experience in administrative law decision-making.

  • Have exceptional interpersonal and communication skills.

  • Show the ability to work collaboratively and handle sensitive information discreetly.

  • Possess knowledge of legislation governing animal care in scientific research (desirable).
