The Office of Kristy McBain MP is seeking applications for an ongoing, full-time Media & Digital Adviser (Adviser 3) to form part of our small but effective media team, based in Parliament House, Canberra.
Position Overview
This role will work closely with the Director of Communications, policy team and electorate staff. It will be a dynamic role, responding to media enquiries, producing media releases, briefing the Minister and engaging with the press gallery and regional media.
This role is also responsible for managing the Minister's social media strategy, and a candidate with strong digital skills will be looked upon favourably.
The successful applicant will support the values of the Member and progressive policy agenda of the Australian Government.
The key duties of the position are, but are not limited to:
- Prepare and provide timely, high-quality written material including media releases, speeches, and talking points.
- Develop and implement the Minister's social media strategy including creation of digital content, moderation, planning and analytics.
- Monitor news media, press conferences and social media platforms, ensuring that the Minister is appropriately briefed on emerging matters of public interest.
- Plan and manage media events.
- Provide advice and support on electorate media engagement and communications.
- Liaise with the press gallery, regional and local media and portfolio stakeholders as directed or required.
- Interstate travel will be required for this role, with occasional irregular work hours including weekend work.
The ideal applicant should possess the following skills, qualifications, and experience:
- Strong written and verbal communications skills.
- Firm understanding of the Australian media and communications environment.
- Sound knowledge of the political process and the Australian parliamentary and political system.
- Experience managing professional social media accounts, from content production to community management.
- Experience in the processes of planning, organising and implementing communication strategies.
- Demonstrated ability to provide timely, high quality written material including media releases, speeches and talking points.
- Confidence working independently, managing deadlines, and juggling priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Demonstrated professional integrity and the ability to exercise discretion and maintain confidentiality.
- Ability to rapidly acquire a sound knowledge of the structure and functions of the portfolio.
- Videography, photography and/or graphic design skills will be highly regarded.
Employment conditions:
- The position is offered under the Members of Parliament (Staff) Act 1984 and conditions are outlined in the Commonwealth Members of Parliament Staff Enterprise Agreement which include:
- A commencing salary between $109,788 and $162,021will be negotiated depending on experience and relevant skills.
- An additional optional allowance of $34,223 may be considered in recognition of, and as compensation for, reasonable additional hours of work and any travel requirements.
- Relocation assistance, studies assistance and paid study leave may also be available (subject to eligibility requirements).
- An employer superannuation contribution of 15.4% will be payable.

- An initial probationary period of three months may apply and may be subject to extension.
- The successful applicant may be required to undergo a National Police History Check.
- Staff may be subject to automatic cessation triggers in accordance with Section 14 of the MOP(S) Act.
- The successful applicant will be required to comply with their obligations under the Behaviour Codes and Standards.
- For staff employed by a Minister or Parliamentary Secretary either in a personal or electorate staff position, it is a condition of your employment that you obtain and maintain a Negative Vetting 2 security clearance and comply with the Ministerial Staff Code of Conduct.
