About you

The successful applicant will need to be flexible, understanding and embrace cultural protocols and practices so that relationships between Aboriginal communities and the wider community are well facilitated. Your ability to navigate complex issues with sensitivity and respect will contribute to an inclusive environment where Aboriginal heritage is recognised, respected, and celebrated. Your excellent communication skills are essential to pave the way for meaningful collaboration and positive outcomes for all involved parties. The ability to manage multiple competing priorities whilst delivering within statutory timeframes is essential.

Dedication to producing quality outcomes, delivering results, and ensuring great customer service will be highly valued in this role.  You will be required to build strong relationships with other government agencies and key stakeholders to bring a collaborative approach to the conservation of cultural heritage.

About the role

Heritage NSW is seeking a dedicated Aboriginal Heritage Officer to join the Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Conservation team. This role presents a unique and meaningful opportunity to contribute to the conservation of Aboriginal cultural heritage across a diverse range of sites - from smaller, individual locations to extensive cultural landscapes. These areas hold deep spiritual, historical, social, educational, and natural resource significance for Aboriginal communities.

As the Aboriginal Heritage Officer, you will join an energetic and supportive team to help deliver heritage conservation programs of cultural heritage sites. You'll provide sound advice on Aboriginal cultural heritage matters to a range of stakeholders including landowners, local communities, government agencies, schools and interest groups. As these stakeholders are in various locations, you will need to hold a current driver's licence and be willing to undertake travel for periods of work away from home, as operational needs dictate.

Essential requirements

  • Tertiary qualifications or sound experience in Aboriginal cultural heritage or relevant field.
  • Driver's Licence and willingness to travel.
  • This is an Identified role under Section 14d of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977 and as such Aboriginality is an essential requirement of the role. Aboriginal identified positions are developed where Aboriginal identity, cultural knowledge or connections are a genuine aspect of the role.
  • Positions are specifically noted under the provisions of the NSW Anti-discrimination Act for Aboriginal people who meet the following criteria:

1. is of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent, and

2. identifies as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person, and

3. is accepted as such by the Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander community.
