The role will focus on delivering scalable, secure, and performant data architectures that enable advanced analytics, AI/ML workloads, and business intelligence at enterprise scale.

The successful candidate will combine deep expertise in data engineering, analytics, governance, and cloud-native architecture with practical experience implementing Microsoft Fabric in complex environments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and implementation of modern data platforms leveraging Microsoft Fabric (Data Lakehouse, Data Warehouse, Real-Time Analytics, Data Science, and Power BI).
  • Define end-to-end architectures covering ingestion, transformation (ETL/ELT), storage, governance, and consumption layers.
  • Ensure alignment with whole-of-government standards, protective security frameworks (PSPF/ISM), and enterprise data governance policies.

Implementation & Delivery

  • Oversee delivery of secure, scalable, and cost-efficient data pipelines, medallion architectures, and unified data models using Microsoft Fabric tools (OneLake, Data Factory, Synapse Data Engineering).
  • Integrate Fabric with complementary Microsoft and cloud services (Azure Synapse, Databricks, Azure Data Lake, Power BI, Purview).
  • Drive optimisation of performance, cost efficiency, and scalability to meet agency and program needs.

Governance & Security

  • Work with security and compliance teams to meet statutory and regulatory requirements (e.g., Australian Privacy Act, NDB Scheme, GDPR/CCPA, PSPF/ISM).
  • Promote trusted data practices to support transparency, accountability, and data sovereignty.

Advisory & Leadership

  • Serve as a trusted advisor to senior stakeholders on data strategy, architecture choices, and modernization roadmaps.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to engineers, analysts, and business users adopting Fabric.
  • Champion best practices in FinOps, DevSecOps, and AI/BI enablement to support digital transformation and evidence-based policy making.

Qualifications and Skills

Technical Expertise

  • In-depth knowledge of Microsoft Fabric services (OneLake, Data Factory, Synapse Data Engineering, Data Warehouse, Real-Time Analytics, Data Science, Power BI).
  • Proven experience with cloud data platforms (Azure preferred) and modern ecosystems (Databricks, Snowflake, Synapse).
  • Strong SQL and Python skills for data modelling, transformations, and pipeline development.
  • Hands-on experience with metadata-driven ingestion frameworks, medallion architectures, and Delta/Parquet formats.
  • Knowledge of data governance and cataloguing tools (e.g., Purview, Collibra, Unity Catalog).

Architecture & Strategy

  • Demonstrated success leading large-scale data transformations, migrations, or greenfield platform builds.
  • Familiarity with frameworks such as DAMA-DMBOK and TOGAF.
  • Expertise in data lakehouse and warehouse modelling (Kimball star schema, Data Vault).
  • Ability to translate complex business requirements into secure, scalable, and cost-effective technical designs.
  • Awareness of FinOps practices for cost governance and usage accountability.
  • Experience applying data governance and risk management frameworks in regulated environments.

Soft Skills

  • Strong communication skills with the ability to simplify complex concepts for non-technical stakeholders.
  • Collaborative leadership style, comfortable guiding multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Outcome-focused problem solver with a commitment to improving government services.
