The opportunity we have available

Finance Business Partner

The Finance Business Partners are strategic professionals who work in partnership with Senior Executives and their teams across the department to facilitate well-informed financial decisions. The team leverage financial expertise, analytical skills and communication to build a bridge between finance and the divisions to identify opportunities and manage risk to achieving department outcomes.

Financial Accounting

The Financial Accounting Team is responsible for meeting the department's statutory financial reporting, asset management, tax and appropriation management requirements, including preparation of annual financial statements and monthly reporting to the Department of Finance and is seeking high performing candidates. The advertised roles will have the opportunity to be exposed to many varied accounting issues which affect an extremely diverse Department.

We are currently looking to fill 1 financial accountant position and create merit pool for both these roles to fill in future vacancies.

What will you do?

Finance Business Partner

The role of the Finance Business Partner is to deliver customer focused, fit-for-purpose and professional financial management and budgeting services on behalf of the Chief Financial Officer, to Senior Executives and staff, particularly on complex matters such as financial analysis, forecasting, budgeting, costing and reporting.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Develop and manage departmental budgets, including staffing.
  • Prepare monthly financial reports for Senior Executive, including variance analysis and commentary.
  • Monitor and review monthly forecasts in partnership with our stakeholders.
  • Provide advice on emerging and material financial impacts on the financial performance of our stakeholders.
  • Foster and maintain effective working relationships to promote partnerships and seamless financial services.
  • Track divisional staffing movements and recruitment activity.
  • Support the development of internal funding proposals.
  • Prepare monthly financial accruals.
  • Co-ordinate input into the end of financial year process and ANAO audit requests and compliance activities.

Financial Accounting

As part of the Financial Accounting team, the successful candidate will contribute to the department's annual financial statements, including preparing high quality and comprehensive reconciliations and workpapers

Your role may also include:

  • Preparing the monthly actual financial results and reported through the Department of Finance's Central Budget Management System (CBMS).
  • Assisting with the preparation of the Department's Annual Financial Statements including preparing accounting file notes and position papers.
  • Providing financial reporting and accounting advice.
  • Maintaining professional working relationships with key internal and external stakeholders, including the Australian National Audit Office and the Department of Finance.
  • Managing the department's assets register, coordinating the annual asset stocktake process, and coordinating the revaluation of assets and impairment reviews.
  • Management of the treasury functions, including appropriation drawdowns and cash management.

Eligibility requirements

Employment with the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications, Sport and the Arts is subject to conditions prescribed within the Public Service Act 1999 including:

  • Citizenship: candidates must be an Australian citizen at the time of submitting your application.
  • Health Assessment: the preferred candidate may be required to undergo a medical examination conducted by the department's preferred medical provider.
  • Security Clearance: the successful candidate must be able to obtain and/or maintain a security clearance at Baseline Level. You must be willing to disclose all relevant and required information. You must have lived in Australia, or have a checkable background, for at least the preceding five years for Baseline Vetting clearances.   • Police check: The successful candidate must satisfactory complete an Australian Federal Police criminal history check.
  • Integrity and Performance check: The successful candidate must satisfy the requirements in an Integrity and Performance check which is completed by your most recent employer.
  • Qualifications: Degree in Accounting, Commerce or similar discipline and studying towards CPA/CA (or equivalent) full member status is highly desirable (required for Financial Accounting position only).
