Senior AI Engineer

Adelaide, South Australia Avance Clinical Full time $120,000 - $180,000 per year

About The Role
The AI Engineer is responsible for engaging with stakeholders to support the identification, creation, testing, and implementation of new AI tools and solutions that will improve operations and accelerate outcomes to business problems. The role will utilise the Avance AI Framework to identify and categorise relevant use cases which will be prioritised by ROI, technology/data readiness and quality.

Day to day tasks include educating technical and non-technical users, identification of use cases (via our AI project framework), creating and monitoring POC, MVP, and implementing finalised tools.

This role will require technical engineering proficiency, commercial awareness and a strong growth mindset, as well as the ability to align ideas and the company Technology Strategy with the company and department strategies.

The position encompasses both technical and business-oriented responsibilities, including participation in ideation, solution, and design workshops; conducting the relevant assessments; tracking value delivery; and ensuring alignment with commercial requirements (ROI).

Core Responsibilities
At our core, we are a data- and trust-driven organisation. As our AI Lead Developer, your mission is to strategically architect and execute AI capabilities that are secure, explainable, and tightly aligned with our research objectives and customer commitments.

  • AI Strategy:

  • You will define and own our AI development strategy, ensuring it aligns with business priorities, ethical expectations, and regulatory constraints — especially in relation to sensitive or high-risk data environments.

  • You are expected to rigorously evaluate the full landscape of AI options — including off-the-shelf models, in-house experimentation, and fully bespoke AI builds — and make evidence-based recommendations that balance technical viability, commercial outcomes, and budgetary scope.
  • You will lead the development and deployment of production-grade AI solutions, ensuring scalability, resilience, and compliance from the outset. This includes prototype pipelines, model training systems, and full-stack AI integrations.

  • AI Agent Development:

  • Design, build, and deploy AI agents to automate tasks, enhance decision-making, and improve operational efficiency across the organization.

  • Develop intelligent systems capable of handling complex data inputs and generating actionable insights.

  • AI-Driven Process Optimization:

  • Identify opportunities to integrate AI into existing workflows to increase efficiency, reduce costs, and improve accuracy.

  • Collaborate with stakeholders to understand business needs and translate them into AI-powered solutions.
  • You will be a key decision-maker and technical expert in evaluating the risk, return, and strategic fit of AI initiatives, with the authority to recommend build, buy, or defer pathways based on clear criteria.
  • You are accountable for managing the trade-offs between innovation and compliance — advancing new solutions while ensuring we never compromise on privacy or trust.

  • Machine Learning Model Development:

  • Develop and implement machine learning models to analyse large datasets, predict outcomes, and optimize business processes.

  • Apply natural language processing (NLP), computer vision, and other AI techniques to solve domain-specific challenges.

  • Data Management and Integration:

  • Design tools that extract, transform, and process structured and unstructured data (PDFs, slides, and more).

  • Work with large, complex datasets from diverse sources, ensuring data quality and integrity.
  • Integrate AI solutions with existing systems and databases to enable seamless data flow and real-time decision-making.

  • Collaboration and Innovation:

  • Partner with scientists, researchers, and business teams to identify AI opportunities and drive innovation.

  • Stay up-to-date with the latest advancements in AI and biotech to ensure the organization remains at the forefront of technology.
  • You will collaborate closely with our data governance, cybersecurity, and research operations teams to ensure AI systems are technically excellent and legally sound.

  • Performance Monitoring and Improvement:

  • Monitor the performance of AI systems and agents, continuously refining and optimizing them for better outcomes.

  • Provide technical support and training to end-users to ensure successful adoption of AI tools.

  • AI Operations & Execution Excellence

Your role is to deliver AI systems that are reliable, secure, and operationally effective under real-world constraints.

  • Emerging Technologies:

You are expected to keep us not just current — but competitively aware — without being swept up in hype cycles.

  • Privacy, Data Segregation & Compliance

Privacy and trust are foundational — not afterthoughts.

  • Team Collaboration & Developer Mentorship

You will work across functions — and lead from the front.

  • Quality Control, Experiment Discipline & Result Reproducibility

Experimentation is encouraged — but always under discipline

  • Success Criteria

You will be considered successful in this role not by the number of models shipped — but by:

  • Your judgment and decision-making on when to build, test, or integrate AI capabilities.
  • The integrity, scalability, and impact of the AI systems you help deploy.
  • Your ability to keep us aware of — and ahead of — meaningful developments in the AI space.
  • The security, privacy, and legal soundness of every AI workflow under your guidance.
  • The clarity, leadership, and discipline you bring to a complex and fast-moving space.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, or a related field. A Ph.D. is a plus.
  • Proven experience in developing and deploying AI solutions, including machine learning models and AI agents.
  • Strong programming skills in Python, R, or similar languages, with experience in AI frameworks such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, or Scikit-learn, Azure ML Studios, Jupyter, or similar
  • Familiarity with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, GCP) and AI/ML tools (e.g., SageMaker, Vertex AI).
  • Knowledge of biotech, life sciences, or healthcare data is highly desirable, as is awareness of commercial requirements.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.
  • Experience in data mining, statistical analysis, and dataset management.
  • Experience in ITIL and DevOps processes, especially in release and change management.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.

To apply, please share an updated CV and one of the team will be in touch should your profile and experience match the needs we are looking for. Due to high volumes of applications, please don't expect an immediate response.
