Volunteer Role — Migration Agent

Position Summary:

AFFMA is seeking a qualified volunteer migration agent to support its mission of providing free, high-quality migration advice to disadvantaged individuals. In this role, you will assist in case preparation, legal analysis, and where applicable, represent or advise clients in tribunal or administrative settings.

Success in this position means helping vulnerable migrants navigate complex legal systems with confidence and clarity, while maintaining the highest standards of ethics and compassion. Your work will directly contribute to life-changing outcomes and support AFFMA's continued commitment to access to justice.

This role is central to AFFMA's operations. You will work closely with the CEO, senior and junior volunteers and clients to deliver lawful, strategic, and timely assistance.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide accurate legal advice in migration and refugee matters under the Migration Act 1958 (Cth).
  • Assist with the preparation of legal submissions, statutory declarations, and case evidence.
  • Liaise with clients to gather and verify information relevant to their applications or appeals.
  • Where applicable, represent or prepare clients for hearings before the ART.
  • Maintain strict client confidentiality and professional standards.

Qualifications:

  • Admitted as a legal practitioner in Australia (required).
  • Experience in immigration or refugee law (required).
  • Strong written advocacy and research skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to access to justice and ethical practice.
  • Able to commit at least one day per week, remotely or in person.
