About Carers WA:

Carers WA is a values driven organisation and the peak body in Western Australia representing the needs and interests of carers in Western Australia and is part of a national network of Carers Associations providing a range of support services, supporting Carers across Western Australia.

A "young carer" is a person aged 8-25 years who helps support a member of their household or family who is experiencing a mental health challenge, disability, long term health condition (including a chronic condition or terminal illness), a substance dependency or who is frail aged.

About the Young Carer Education and Engagement Officer (YCEEO):

  • Part-time 3 day per week, fixed-term contract ending 30 June 2026.
  • Salary package: $47.53 per hour (approximately $55,600 per annum for 3 days per week), plus super and salary packaging, 5 weeks annual leave (with 17.5% leave loaded on annual leave) and 2 wellness days p.a. (pro-rata for part-time).

The YCEEO is responsible for increasing engagement opportunities within education facilities (schools, TAFE and universities), community service providers, associated network groups, and Local Government Associations, to increase awareness and supports for young carers in the community. It is a predominately outreach facing role covering Perth Metro areas, and may include some regional travel.

The role requires the skills and knowledge to collate and present information workshops to a variety of stakeholders including students attending various educational outlets, and expanding the already established Young Carer Peer Support Groups Project throughout Perth Metro to include selected regional areas. In addition, the role involves organising and coordinating a selection of school holiday young carer and / or family activities providing inclusive fun respite options.

The YCEEO role is embedded within a supportive Young Carer Team made up of other allied health skill sets and responsibilities, who adhere to Rights of the Child and Child Safety Standards.

Essential Selection Criteria:

  1. Demonstrated professional experience in a related field and related tertiary qualification, including but not limited to, health promotion, education engagement, or community development with a specific focus on youth and family work.
  2. Previous experience of working in an outcomes focused and awareness raising role involving young people engaged in state based schools or selection of youth based community organisations.
  3. Understanding and empathy of carers, health, mental health, ageing and disability issues including with Aboriginal, Culturally and Linguistically Diverse and LGBTIQA+ individuals and communities.
  4. Excellent communication and relationship building skills and ability to engage with both adults (school staff / parents), students and volunteers.
  5. Demonstrated experience in creating opportunities to engage with newly identified stakeholders and maintain positive working relationships focused on young carer objectives thereafter.
  6. Demonstrated experience in developing and facilitating workshops, presenting, public speaking and attending education, community youth and health related expo's.
  7. Project based skills and experience including project planning, scheduling, time management, KPI management, report writing and managing own budgets criteria.
  8. High level of competency using computer software including Microsoft Office Suite, and/or customised client databases.
  9. Flexibility to travel within Perth Metro and regionally as and when required, and perform occasional evening and weekend work (e.g., to deliver various project requirements including workshops and events).
  10. Current C class drivers license, a current WA Working With Children's Check or ability to obtain, and a National Police Clearance issued within the last 3 months (to be provided upon employment).

Desirable Previous Experience

  • Knowledge and experience of Rights of the Child and Child Safety Standards.
  • An understanding of mental health and working from a trauma informed practice framework.
  • Current First Aid and CPR
  • Applied Suicide Safety Training – ASIST.
