We are seeking a passionate and experienced Sommelier to join our core team. This is a hands-on, hybrid role that combines wine curation and guest service, offering a meaningful opportunity for personal growth while contributing to our business objectives.

Waxflower is a listening bar that combines terroir-focused wines, zero-waste innovative cocktails, and a seasonally driven menu with a dynamic music experience. We are known for our bespoke sound system, a rotating roster of local and international DJs, and high-calibre staff that bring it all together. At Waxflower, we are committed to continuously evolving our offerings, service, and team. As a small venue, we believe in having our staff at the forefront of this growth, consistently striving for improvement in all areas.

Since opening in 2020, we have purposefully expanded our on-premises wine cellar with the intention of further solidifying our reputation as a wine destination. This role is key in us taking that next step. You will support our product offering and display a combination of knowledge, passion, and a strong commitment to delivering an exceptional guest experience.

Key Requirements

  • Minimum 3 years of experience in a similar wine-focused role
  • Proven examples of curating wine lists in reputable establishments
  • Background in service with additional expertise in small team supervision
  • Calm under pressure, excellent communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Professional, team-focused, with a proactive attitude
  • WSET Level III or higher preferred
  • Ideally familiar with existing producers and suppliers
  • Current RSA
  • Australian working rights are preferred but not mandatory
  • Multiple contactable references for similar positions
  • Able to perform this role in a full-time (or close to) capacity

Key Responsibilities

  • Management of the wine list and cellar
  • Fostering and maintaining wine producer and supplier relationships
  • Wine stocktake and wastage
  • Wine training of FOH staff
  • Consistently elevating the wine experience for our guests
  • Support the Manager in the daily operations of the venue
  • Support the team during service, including opening and closing procedures
  • Maintain service standards and venue cleanliness
  • Liaise with BOH to ensure smooth service
  • Train and mentor junior or new staff
