Primary objective

Provide clinically responsive and culturally safe mental health care through prevention, early detection, crisis intervention, and care

coordination within a defined scope of practice and as a valued member of the Mental Health Access Team, Top End Mental Health

Services.

Context statement

The role involves active participation in multidisciplinary care across Emergency Department presentations, community mental health

assessments, and outreach visits. The practitioner will support Aboriginal clients experiencing acute mental health concerns by providing

culturally safe care, supporting crisis interventions, and facilitating engagement with families and community supports. Responsibilities

include culturally informed assessment, brief interventions, follow-up care, assistance with psychosocial needs, and provision of cultural

advice to clinical staff. The position plays a vital role in promoting cultural understanding and safety within emergency and community-

based mental health services, and in ensuring Aboriginal clients are linked to appropriate internal and external supports.

Key duties and responsibilities

1. Provision of Screening and Brief Interventions for alcohol and other drug use within Royal Darwin Hospital.

2. Deliver cessation support services for tobacco, alcohol and other drug use (including timely referral to appropriate external agency).

3. Work with hospital staff and discharge planners to case plan and facilitate community-based cessation and rehab options on discharge

including referrals to Government and Non-Government AOD services and negotiation of appropriate case management lead agency

where necessary or appropriate.

  1. Support and encourage hospital-based health professionals to better manage alcohol and other drugs clients care whilst in hospital;

assist with client case management processes of AOD clients as required.

  1. Contribute to the ongoing revision and evaluation of policies and contribute to the AOD Workforce Development Strategy. Work

from a best practice, evidence-based framework and ensure all duties and responsibilities are carried out in consideration of a cross-

cultural environment.

  1. Assist other AOD service professionals engage with and provide services to community hospital inpatients, including advising on how

best to communicate and liaise effectively, using appropriate language, culture and protocols.

  1. Follow defined service quality standards, work health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being undertaken to

ensure high quality, safe services and workplaces.

  1. Foster a positive workplace culture through exemplary leadership practices and role modelling behavior.

Selection criteria

Essential

1. Experience working in the AOD Sector, working in a cross cultural and clinical environment.

2. Demonstrated ability to provide brief interventions, in consultation with AOD nursing staff, to patients with AOD issues, maintain client

notes, initiate referrals and liaise with external AOD agencies.

3. Ability to work as a team member to deliver AOD interventions in the hospital (including the Emergency Department) and community

service settings (assessment, counselling, relapse prevention, education, case management, referral and discharge referral planning).

4. Well-developed communication, collaboration and negotiation skills.

5. Demonstrated experience using an electronic client recording systems.

6. Current Northern Territory Manual driver's license or ability to obtain prior to commencement.

Desirable

1. Certificate III or IV in Community Services (Alcohol and Other Drugs) or equivalent.
