Primary objective

Provide clinically responsive and culturally safe mental health care through prevention, early detection, crisis intervention, and care

coordination within a defined scope of practice and as a valued member of the Mental Health Access Team (MHAT), Top End Mental

Health Services.

Context statement

The role involves active participation in multidisciplinary care across Emergency Department presentations, community mental health

assessments, and outreach visits. The practitioner will support Aboriginal clients experiencing acute mental health concerns by providing

culturally safe care, supporting crisis interventions, and facilitating engagement with families/community supports. Responsibilities include

culturally informed assessment, brief interventions, follow-up care, assistance with psychosocial needs, and provision of cultural advice to

clinical staff. The position plays a vital role in promoting cultural understanding and safety within emergency and community-based mental

health services, and in ensuring Aboriginal clients are linked to appropriate internal and external supports.

Key duties and responsibilities

1. Provide culturally safe and clinically appropriate assessment and support for individuals presenting with mental health concerns within

MHAT.

2. Collaborate with various professionals within the services and external agency to provide timely referral and services to patient.

3. Contribute to policy review, service evaluation and workforce development initiatives ensuring interventions are evidence based,

recovery -orientated and responsive to the needs to Indigenous clients and families.

4. Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation within electronic client information system and case notes, ensuring compliance

with service standards, quality, safety and legal frameworks.

5. Assist health professionals to engage with and provide services to community, emergency department including advising on how best

to communicate and liaise effectively, using appropriate language, culture and protocols.

6. Follow defined service quality standards, work health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being undertaken to

ensure high quality, safe services and workplaces.

7. Foster a positive workplace culture through exemplary practices and role modelling behavior.

Selection criteria

Essential

1. Experience working within the mental health sector, with knowledge of mental health issues impacting Aboriginal Indigenous People

and communities.

2. Demonstrated ability to provide support and review, in consultation with MHAT Clinical staff, to patients with mental health issues,

maintain client notes, initiate referrals and liaise with external MHAT agencies.

3. Ability to work as a team member to deliver MHAT interventions in the hospital (including the Emergency Department) and community

service settings (assistance in linking with other services, review, referral, discharge planning).

4. Well-developed communication, collaboration and negotiation skills.

5. Proven skills in the effective use of information technology records and systems maintenance for the effective delivery of client

services.

6. Current Northern Territory Manual driver's license or ability to obtain prior to commencement.

Desirable

1. Qualifications as an Aboriginal Mental Health Worker or involved in study relevant to the position.
