SENIOR STRATEGIC UNDERGROUND PLANNING ENGINEER

Based in Brisbane and reporting to the Manager Business Strategy, you will be responsible for applying your underground mining expertise to design, optimise, and simulate advanced mining systems, deliver high-quality studies, build robust technical-financial models, and integrate underground and open pit strategies to support OTML's long-term business growth.

Your role will involve:

  • Contributing underground mining expertise across multiple methods, including caving and mechanised techniques;
  • Preparing and delivering accurate, high-quality mining studies and long-term business cases;
  • Developing and maintaining robust technical-financial models to inform business decisions;
  • Integrating underground and open pit strategies to maximize long-term value and operational alignment;
  • Supporting the implementation of optimization and automation tools for improved efficiency;
  • Collaborating effectively across technical and operational teams to ensure seamless execution of strategic initiatives; and
  • Ensuring safety remains the highest priority in all technical designs, studies, and recommendations.

To be considered, you must possess the following:

  • Degree in Mining Engineering with 15+ years' mining experience, including at least 10 years in underground mining;
  • Demonstrating proven expertise across production and engineering, including Due Diligence, Scoping, Pre-Feasibility, and Feasibility Studies;
  • A valid Visa and working rights to work in Australia;
  • Bringing local (PNG) or international exposure, with the ability to thrive in multi-cultural, high-performance teams;
  • Applying advanced underground mining knowledge, with strong skills in optimization, design, scheduling, and use of mining software tools to deliver accurate, value-driven long-term plans;
  • Possessing proficiency in multiple underground mining methods, including Sub-Level Caving (SLC) and other mechanised techniques, with sound knowledge of drainage and ventilation systems;
  • Integrating financial insight, with the ability to apply basic financial modelling to evaluate and compare strategies across mine plans and assets;
  • Communicating complex strategies with clarity and impact, tailoring messages effectively from technical teams through to senior leadership; and
  • Embracing creativity and innovation, with a passion for testing new technologies, challenging the status quo, and embedding global best practices for continuous improvement.
