New Porgera Limited (NPL) is a company incorporated in Papua New Guinea and owns the Porgera Gold Mine in Enga Province. The Porgera Gold Mine will employ nearly 3,000 Papua New Guineans at full production, and over the last 30 years of life of the mine it has contributed approximately 10% of Papua New Guinea's total annual exports.

About the role

We are seeking a highly experienced Senior Paste & Backfill Engineer to join our Mining Technical Services Team. Reporting to the Manager Technical Services, you will be responsible for the safe, efficient, and cost-effective design, scheduling, and delivery of paste and rock fill to support Porgera's underground operations. The role oversees backfill operations to ensure compliance with geotechnical, safety, and production requirements, including fill distribution scheduling, strength testing, and quality assurance. It involves troubleshooting plant and delivery systems, integrating backfill into mining schedules, contributing to budgeting and efficiency improvements, and providing technical support for stope sequencing and fill safety. You will also lead continuous improvement initiatives, mentors junior engineers and national staff, and ensure all activities meet safety, environmental, and regulatory standards.

You will model safety behaviours and coach and develop your team, working with your team to assess and manage risk.  NPL operates in a complex environment that requires the successful applicant to be a self-starter, with strong ability in delivery to support the mines successful operation whilst coordinating the efforts of your team members to complete projects according to plan in a timely and safe manner.

About you

As the successful applicant, you will hold a Bachelor's Degree in mining or geotechnical engineering and at least ten (10) years of underground mining experience, including 3–5 years in paste/backfill engineering. Candidates should have strong technical expertise in paste and hydraulic fill systems, geotechnical backfill design, paste plant operations, pumping systems, and distribution networks. The position demands excellent analytical, problem-solving, and troubleshooting skills, along with proven leadership and mentoring abilities in multicultural environments. Experience in large-scale hard rock underground operations and remote or international FIFO settings, such as PNG, is advantageous, with a strong commitment to safety and continuous improvement essential.

This role is offered on a FIFO basis either from Papua New Guinea or Australia/New Zealand with a 21/14 roster on a contract basis with a highly competitive remuneration package.
