This is an Aboriginal Designated Position, classified under 'special measures' of Section 12 of the Equal Opportunity Act 2010. Only Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are eligible to apply.
About the Role
The Public Intoxication Response Support Worker provides respectful, trauma-informed, and culturally safe care to individuals affected by alcohol related intoxication in public spaces. The role includes assertive outreach transportation to safety, and monitoring clients in Rumbalara's Sobering Service to ensure their health and wellbeing.
This role uses a harm minimisation approach to de-escalate situations, offer immediate care, and link individuals with relevant health, housing, and community support services.
About You
To excel in this position, you should possess the following qualifications and qualities:
- You are Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander.
- Relevant qualifications (e.g., alcohol and other drugs, community development, social work) is desirable. Social Worker – eligibility and/or current membership with the Australian Association of Social Workers (required).
- Experience working with, and awareness of the issues that affect, Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander people, maintaining culturally safe practice, challenging systemic racism and unconscious bias.
- Demonstrated skills in providing harm reduction interventions with people who are intoxicated.
- Ability to work within a multi-disciplinary team including peer workers, AOD workers, mental health workers and collaborating with partner agencies, as well as working independently.
- The ability to take initiative, act calmly and with confidence in challenging situations and works well under own direction.
- The ability to work with vulnerable people who may display complex and challenging behaviours.
- Understands and implements appropriate procedures and strategies to deal with crisis i.e. suicidal behaviour, panic attack, stress, reaction to trauma, overdose, threatening behaviour and psychotic behaviour etc.
- Be available to work within a mixed service delivery model, including scheduled rostered shifts and participation in an on-call rotation, as required to meet service demands.

- Salary packaging of $15,900 available for Part- or Full-time employees.
