Senior Solicitor, Legislation (VPS Month Fixed Term

A large Victorian Government department with a diverse portfolio is seeking an experienced legislative lawyer to join its high-performing Legislation Branch on an 18-month fixed-term contract.

This role is an in-house legislative projects position - perfect for someone who thrives on turning government policy into precise, effective legislation. You'll work across multiple portfolios, contributing to bill reform, subordinate instruments, and legal advice on other priority matters.

Your new role

As a Senior Solicitor, Legislation, you will:

  • Lead and support legislative reform projects from drafting instructions to Royal Assent.

  • Prepare and review Cabinet submissions, Ministerial briefs, and subordinate instruments.

  • Review draft Bills prepared by Parliamentary Counsel to ensure legal precision and alignment with policy intent.

  • Provide statutory interpretation and legislative advice to internal stakeholders.

  • Liaise with policy teams, Parliamentary Counsel, and other stakeholders to deliver high-quality legislative outcomes.

  • Contribute across a broad portfolio of legislative work, not just one program.

What you'll need to succeed

  • An Australian lawyer holding or eligible to hold an Australian practising certificate.

  • Demonstrated legislative development experience in Bills and/or subordinate legislation (non-negotiable).

  • Strong knowledge of Victorian legislative processes, OPC style, Governor in Council procedures, and Cabinet protocols.

  • Proven statutory interpretation skills and the ability to provide authoritative legislative advice.

  • Effective stakeholder management skills - balancing competing priorities and negotiating realistic timelines.

  • Public sector or private practice backgrounds welcome.
