Experienced Mechanic and Workshop Manager

Samra Transport Service is a national linehaul logistics company, operating in both the ambient and refrigerated arenas across Australia. We operate 30+ prime movers as well as trailing equipment, with further access to a team of 10+ sub-contractors increasing our fleet as workload fluctuates throughout the year.

About the Role

We are currently seeking a full-time dedicated Workshop Supervisor and Diesel Mechanic to oversee the day-to-day operations of our workshop. The key responsibilities of the role include supervising and coordinating maintenance and repair activities, ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory standards, including a complete understanding of the NHVR (National heavy vehicle Regulator requirements) as well as managing mechanic personnel and workshop budgets.

Technical & Mechanical Responsibilities:

  • Diagnostics and Repair: Identifying and resolving mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues in diesel engines and heavy vehicles.
  • Servicing and Maintenance: Performing routine maintenance tasks like oil changes, fluid level checks, and safety inspections.
  • Component Replacement: Repairing or replacing malfunctioning or worn-out components, parts, and other equipment.
  • Specialized Repairs: Handling repairs on specific types of equipment or specialised vehicles.
  • Testing and Quality Control: Ensuring all work meets quality standards and test-driving vehicles to confirm proper functionality.

Workshop Management Responsibilities:

  • Supervision and Coordination: Overseeing the work of other mechanics and apprentices, providing guidance, and ensuring efficient workflow.
  • Scheduling and Resource Allocation: Planning and allocating jobs, managing workshop resources (tools, equipment, parts), and scheduling maintenance activities.
  • Compliance and Safety: Ensuring all work is performed in accordance with relevant legislation, regulations, and company policies.
  • Workshop Operations: Managing the day-to-day operations of the workshop, including maintaining a clean and safe working environment.
  • Breakdowns: Liaise with breakdown service providers interstate and internal staff locally to manage breakdowns in an efficient and cost effective manner with the clients requirements in mind.
  • Inventory Management: Potentially managing the stock of parts and supplies, ensuring availability for repairs and maintenance.
  • Record Keeping: Maintaining accurate records of work completed, parts used, and maintenance schedules.

Managerial and Administrative Responsibilities:

  • Customer Service: Interacting with clients, providing updates on repairs, and addressing customer concerns.
  • Training and Development: Providing training and guidance to other mechanics and apprentices.
  • Budget Management: Potentially contributing to budget planning, cost control, and resource allocation.
  • Performance Management: Monitoring workshop performance, providing feedback, and potentially contributing to performance evaluations.
  • Communication and Liaison: Effectively communicating with internal and external stakeholders, including clients, suppliers, and other departments.

Attributes Required

  • 5+ years of experience in the transport compliance industry working in a similar role
  • Complete understanding of Chain of Responsibility, NHVR and Mainroads WA regulations with a practical approach.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills along with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Strong computer skills working in web-based programs, MS office products and online portals
  • Excellent organisational skills as well as multitasking and working under pressure.
  • Ability to work autonomy and in liaison with all stakeholders.
  • Provide leadership by motivating, developing, mentoring and coaching staff, fostering a high performance and engaged team.
  • Strong customer focus, driving a compliant service experience beyond customer expectation.
