About the role
We are seeking a dedicated women Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Health Practitioner to deliver culturally safe, healthcare for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women in the community. This role is essential in ensuring culturally appropriate care, particularly for Women's Business, while advocating for patients and their families.
Mater Hospital Brisbane is seeking an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Liaison Officer to join our service on a Permanent Part-Time (30.4 hours per week), maximum term 6-month contract based at South Brisbane.
In this role you will work within a small team, providing a cultural and liaison link between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients, their families and external agencies and Mater employees and services.
Salary range: $ $51.73 per hour plus superannuation andaccess to not-for-profit salary packaging up to $15,900+access to many staff benefits
What you'll be doing
As an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Liaison Officer, you will provide a range of practical supports to patients and to Mater employees with the aim of delivering exceptional culturally responsive and safe healthcare to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients.
Your key responsibilities will include:
- Liaising with Mater clinical and clinical support areas in adopting an interdisciplinary approach to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients and their families accessing healthcare through Mater
- Communicate and work alongside patients and their families from diverse backgrounds and geographic locations for the purpose of supporting them in the lead up to, during, and following their hospital or healthcare experience
- Provide person specific cultural advice and support to individual patients and other clinicians providing direct care
- Input to sustainable organisation-wide strategies, policies and programs relating to healthcare for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians
- Advocate for the needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients and their families accessing healthcare at Mater as well as those being admitted from and discharged into other service provider organisations
- Liaise with external agencies and communities with regard to improving the quality and continuity of care delivered to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients
About you
To be successful in this role you will possess the following:
- Demonstrated understanding of the barriers of access to healthcare experienced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples
- Knowledge of and experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities
- High level interpersonal, communication, presentation, adult education and negotiation skills in order to liaise effectively and build relationships with multiple internal and external stakeholders
- Understanding of and commitment to work within the mission, ethos and values of Mater
- Ability to function as a team member, maintain confidentiality, creatively problem solve, work with minimal supervision, effectively time manage, and be flexible in order to meet organisational objectives
- Knowledge of or experience working in healthcare (particularly acute) settings
- High level of commitment to principles of privacy and confidentiality
- Demonstrated understanding of the principles of workplace health and safety, equal employment opportunities and anti-discrimination as they relate to the workplace
