Company Overview

The South Australian Metropolitan Fire Service (MFS) is the primary provider of structural firefighting services in South Australia. The MFS is responsible for the protection of the SA community from the effects of fire, chemical incidents and other emergencies. MFS is committed to providing high level emergency services while continuing to be innovative and ensuring a strong focus on education, prevention and building resilience.

Role Overview

Reporting to the Deputy Chief Officer, this pivotal leadership role provides strategic industrial relations advice, advocacy, and support across MFS. This role will lead the enterprise bargaining negotiations, resolve complex industrial matters, and represent MFS in high-stakes forums, including the South Australian Employment Tribunal. This role will oversee key workforce functions, including rostering and return-to-work, and collaborate closely with SAFECOM, unions, and government agencies to ensure operational efficiency, equity, and compliance.

Key Responsibilities include :

  • Lead industrial relations strategy and enterprise bargaining

  • Advise on legislation, awards, and workforce policies

  • Resolve disputes and manage complex employee relations issues

  • Oversee rostering and return-to-work functions

  • Build strong relationships with unions, government, and internal stakeholders.

Skills, Knowledge, and Experience

The successful candidate will hold tertiary qualifications and possess experience in industrial relations, employee relations, law, or human resources. We are seeking a candidate with proven leadership experience in complex industrial environments, with strong negotiation, advocacy, and conflict resolution skills. A background in formal industrial proceedings and stakeholder engagement will be highly regarded, along with the ability to operate effectively in sensitive and high-pressure contexts.
