Melbourne VIC, Australia Australian Unity Full time $120,000 - $180,000 per year

About us

Established in 1840, we are Australia's first wellbeing company, delivering health, wealth and care services for our members and the community.

As a social enterprise, we're motivated by our purpose to positively impact the wellbeing of millions. We reinvest profits to deliver products and services sustainably that matter most to our members, customers and the Australian community.

For us, Real Wellbeing encompasses the whole experience of life. It's about feeling supported in your health, connected with your community and empowered to live life on your terms.

Your New Role Looks Like This:

At Australian Unity, our Home Health business plays a critical role in supporting older Australians and their families with care that enhances wellbeing, independence, and dignity. We're looking for a Senior Legal Counsel to join our Governance team and provide high-quality, commercially-focused legal advice that helps us deliver on this important mission.

In this role, you'll work closely with our leaders and stakeholders across the Home Health division, guiding decisions on a wide range of regulatory, operational, transactional, and compliance matters. Your work will directly influence how we manage risk, respond to complex challenges, and create positive outcomes for our customers, people, and communities.

Please note that this is 12 month fixed term contract.

What you'll be doing:

  • Provide pragmatic and commercially-savvy legal advice across the full spectrum of Home Health activities.
  • Advise on compliance, governance, and regulatory requirements in the aged care sector, ensuring obligations are met while supporting business objectives.
  • Draft, review, and negotiate a variety of agreements; from procurement and consultancy contracts to IT and joint venture agreements.
  • Manage disputes, claims, and litigation to deliver efficient, effective outcomes, while identifying lessons to improve future operations.
  • Support property, leasing, and procurement matters that underpin Home Health operations.
  • Lead responses to regulatory inquiries and investigations, balancing compliance with practical business needs.
  • Partner with leaders to shape submissions to regulators and industry bodies, helping to influence the future of aged care.
  • Contribute to strategic projects alongside the Head of Legal and GM Legal, Risk, Compliance & Quality Assurance.

About you:

You're an experienced legal professional who thrives in complex, fast-paced environments and enjoys balancing detail with big-picture thinking. You'll bring:

  • Strong expertise in commercial and regulatory law (experience in health, aged care, or government-regulated industries will be highly regarded).
  • Proven ability to manage competing priorities and deliver clear, solutions-focused advice.
  • Confidence in handling disputes, negotiations, and regulatory engagement.
  • Strong stakeholder management skills, with the ability to build trust and influence at senior levels.
  • A proactive mindset, with the drive to identify improvements and shape outcomes.

What's on Offer:

You will enjoy a range of great employee benefits and rewards including:

  • Competitive salary + bonus program
  • Enjoy additional yearly Well-Being and Community leave days
  • 14-week paid parental leave, with equal benefit for both parents
  • Employee Referral Program
