Safety Superintendent

This newly created role will ensure the highest standards of safety performance are upheld through proactive systems, procedures, training, and reporting, while working closely with Exploration Managers, the Site Senior Executive (SSE) and other stakeholders both on-lease and off-lease.
Responsibilities- Promote a proactive safety culture across all personnel and contractors.
- Develop, implement, and maintain safety systems, policies, and procedures in compliance with the legislative requirements and industry best practice.
- Support the SSE in managing statutory obligations across mine lease and exploration activities.
- Develop, implement, and maintain the company's Safety and Health Management System to support exploration operations.
- Ensure policies, procedures, and safe work instructions are current, practical, and aligned with exploration risks (drilling, remote work, working at heights, vehicle use, fatigue management).
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives across the SHMS.
- Facilitate hazard identification, risk assessments, and critical control implementation for exploration activities.
- Monitor high-risk work to ensure adequate controls are in place.
- Support Supervisors and Exploration Managers in developing and reviewing Job Safety Analyses (JSAs) and Safe Work Method Statements (SWMS).
- Conduct regular audits and inspections of facilities, equipment, and work processes.
- Review and approve contractor WHS management systems, bridging and onboarding documents.
- Monitor contractor performance and ensure alignment with company safety standards.
- Coordinate safety reporting, incident investigation, and corrective action processes, ensuring accurate and timely documentation.
- Monitor safety performance and prepare reports for the Exploration Manager and SSE, including recommendations for continuous improvement.
- Provide safety leadership and guidance to operational teams, contractors, and exploration field crews.
- Coordinate all aspects of occupational health and hygiene management including monitoring and statutory reporting.
- Assist in emergency preparedness planning, drills, and response coordination.
- Collaborate with the Site safety and training teams to lead the development, delivery, and review of safety training programs for Exploration.
Mandatory (Statutory & Regulatory):
- Diploma or Advanced Diploma in Workplace Health and Safety (or equivalent nationally recognised qualification).
- Recognised Risk Management training (G2 – RIIRIS402E: Carry out risk management processes).
- S1, S2, S3 / G1, G8, G9 units of competency (or equivalent) to meet supervisory competency requirements under MQSHA.
- Incident Investigation training (ICAM, TapRooT, or equivalent).
- Current First Aid and CPR certification.
- Current "C" Class Driver's Licence.
- Minimum 5 years' experience in safety management roles within the mining or exploration industry.
- Strong knowledge of the Mining and Quarrying Safety and Health Act 1999 (Qld) and relevant statutory obligations.
- Demonstrated experience in developing and implementing safety management systems, training, and risk controls.
- Proven ability to conduct incident investigations (e.g., ICAM or equivalent), audits, and safety reporting.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
- Ability to work effectively across both structured mine operations and remote exploration programs.
Highly Regarded / Desirable:
- Degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, or related discipline.
- Certificate IV in Training & Assessment (TAE40122 or equivalent).
- Emergency management qualifications and/or experience in crisis response.
- Rehabilitation and Return-to-Work Coordinator accreditation (where relevant)
- Strong knowledge of the NSW Work Health and Safety (Mines and Petroleum Sites) Act 2013 and relevant statutory obligations.

- Organised, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple priorities.
- Adaptability to work in both structured mining environments and remote exploration settings.
Location
This role will be DIDO from local communities or FIFO from Brisbane or Townsville to our site in Cloncurry NW QLD, with local candidates highly regarded. Local employees are paid a regional allowance and a competitive salary. Roster is 8 days on, 6 days off.
