The Role

The Macquarie Medical School within the Faculty of Medicine, Health and Human Sciences (FMHHS) is seeking a First Nations academic to lead the continuing development, refinement, coordination and delivery of aspects of teaching and learning related to the history, culture, traditional/ contemporary knowledges and health of First Nations peoples in courses for the Macquarie Medical School - especially the Doctor of Medicine (MD).

This role will also work with colleagues in the School and Faculty to strengthen First Nations education - including but not limited to the Academic Director First Nations Health, FMHHS, other First Nations academics in the School & Faculty, and Walanga Muru.

Areas of focus for this role will include:

  • Teaching of First Nations cultural awareness, respect, and cultural responsiveness in interactions with First Nations peoples, under a framework of cultural safety,
  • Teaching of key aspects of history and culture and their connection to current health issues affecting First Nations peoples,
  • Strength-based approaches, and communication as important counters to problem-based perspectives of First Nations health and peoples,
  • Teaching of First Nations perspectives on health and healing, what can be learnt from First Nations approaches
  • Fostering partnerships and engagement that focus on mutually beneficial relationships which support community-led change & co-design.

A key focus of the role will include the development of connections and partnerships for community engagement and First Nations clinical experiences for students in our medical and health courses.

The role would also support alignment of existing learning and teaching with, and implementation of, Mudang Dali - the University's First Nations Connected Curriculum Framework. Opportunities for completing higher degree research studies whilst working in the role will be considered.

About You

You will be a highly motivated person with a passion for education in First Nations culture, history traditional/ contemporary knowledges and health. You have previous academic experience, and you have worked in health or a health-related role, such as an Aboriginal health worker, an Aboriginal Liaison Officer, an Aboriginal Health Practitioner, or other clinician roles in the field.

You have experience in developing, teaching and leading aspects of curricula within a higher education setting. You will be able to bring to the role your established personal and professional connections and networks to provide authentic interactions, and to develop clinical education experiences, for our students.

  • A First Nations person.
  • Postgraduate and/or professional qualifications, qualifications as an Aboriginal Health Practitioner, an Aboriginal Liaison Officer, and/or in a health-related field such as medicine, nursing, physiotherapy, or other allied health profession, public health, or a related area.
  • Demonstrated experience in teaching and learning with evidence of a focus on ensuring a high-quality student experience utilising First Nations knowledges, experiences, pedagogies and perspectives: particularly First Nations peoples' experience of the health system.
  • Demonstrated experience to effectively teach, including an ability to develop and lead scholarly and innovative approaches to teaching and learning;
  • Experience undertaking community engagement activities, particularly in First Nations health networks.
  • Demonstrated excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with an ability to relate to staff and students from all backgrounds and disciplines, and to represent the faculty to external stakeholders and the general public.
  • Demonstrated ability to contribute to the development of a culture of excellence and scholarship in health and medical education.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the principles of confidentiality, anti-discrimination, staff and student equity, occupational health and safety as well as other relevant legislation. The ability to implement equal employment opportunity and occupational health and safety plans, policies and programs.

Additional criteria for level C applicants:

  • Experience and/or qualifications in public health, health policy, or First Nations health research
  • Demonstrated evidence of research activity in the field of medical or health-related education, relative to opportunity.
  • Demonstrated capacity to supervise higher degree research students.
  • Ability to develop and lead scholarly and innovative approaches to teaching and learning.
  • Masters or PhD in a relevant discipline or fellowship of a relevant specialist college or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated success using technologies associated with blended learning to ensure incorporation of First Nations curriculum in an innovative way, is desirable.
