Primary objective
Under the direction of the Business Manager and/or Principal, maintain the school premises, its buildings and equipment in a safe,
neat, and orderly condition in accordance with Department standards and Work Health and Safety regulations.
Context Statement
Howard Springs School is a rural school twenty minutes from Darwin. We have a strong commitment to community and are an
inclusive school, ranging from Preschool to Year 6. The school has an enrolment of approximately 340 students. Howard Springs
is committed to delivering excellence and equality in education by providing a safe and nurturing learning environment.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Regularly inspect and undertake general repairs and maintenance to school buildings, property and grounds that require
technical, general handy work or tradesman skills as required. This includes minor irrigation repairs.
2. Carry out a range of tasks to maintain school premises in a neat and tidy condition.
3. Action potential Work, Health, and Safety risks by immediately reporting or exercising judgement in resolving the risk.
4. Oversee the satisfactory completion of repairs conducted by outside contractors.
5. Inspect and unlock/lock school premises at the required times, maintain toilets and wet areas in a clean and hygienic state
during school hours. Report immediately unusual activity e.g. vandalism, break in etc.
6. Carry out minor purchasing, collection and distribution of stores, mail/courier and moving furniture and fittings as required.
7. Assist with school excursions, camps, concerts, sports days, school crossing and other special events as required.
8. Prioritise and perform works tasks, under limited supervision and in a reliable manner, while adhering to school and DoE policies.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Demonstrated experience and ability to produce a high standard of finish whilst working independently with general handy
work projects and gardens/grounds maintenance in a timely manner.
2. Demonstrated ability to determine priorities, meet deadlines and work in a proactive and preventative manner.
3. Well-developed communication and interpersonal skills when dealing with the public, contractors, school staff and students
and an ability to interact effectively with people from diverse cultures, including maintaining a high level of confidentiality.
4. Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team working within the framework of DoE Work Health and Safety.
5. Demonstrated ability to carry out inspections and minor maintenance of buildings and playgrounds.
- Current drivers licence.
Desirable
1. A relevant trade qualification or recognised equivalent trade experience or technical knowledge of practices, procedures and
skill obtained through considerable training or experience.
2. Current first aid certificate or the ability to obtain by commencement.
- Commitment to obtaining additional qualifications or licences as required.
