The Role

The Memorial's Research Centre manages the Memorial's library and archive of the written records of war, providing access and delivering reference services about Australian military history, the Memorial, and its collections. The Official Records collection is a key primary resource for historical studies and integral to this archive and the fulfilment of the Memorial's purpose. Primarily containing documents created by the Australian armed forces and related agencies during wartime and peacekeeping operations, the Official Records collection includes operational and planning records, the papers of the official historians and corporate records created by the Memorial itself.

Under general direction, the Assistant Curator (Part Time), Official Records participates in the arrangement, description, control and care of the Official Records collection; as well as participating in curatorial interpretation of the collection via Memorial's website, exhibitions, public programs and social media. This position contributes to the Memorial's current major development project, which encompasses building works and gallery development, helping to improve the experience and understanding of our visitors.

This position entails working with potentially distressing and culturally sensitive material.

This position will initially be filled for up to 12 months, with the possibility of extension and/or permanency.

Core Responsibilities

•    Apply best archival and curatorial practice to contribute to the development, care for and control of the Official Records archival collection, including by appraisal, arrangement and description, preservation and storage, and documentation in the National Archives of Australia and the Australian War Memorial's collection management systems.

•    Participate in building public engagement with the Official Records collection by undertaking research and contributing to the Memorial's gallery development, exhibitions, public programs, website, and social media.

•    Provide timely advice to internal and external stakeholders within legislative and policy guidelines.

•    Perform safe manual handling techniques and move a variety of collection material, including but not limited to files and boxes.

•    Provide support as necessary for other priorities and projects as identified in the Memorial's Corporate Plan, including the Memorial's CEW Bean Research Centre and Reference Service.

•    Observe APS values and apply the principles of workplace diversity, participative work practices and occupational health and safety.

Position Eligibility

•    Under section 22(8) of the Public Service Act 1999, employees must be Australian citizens to be employed in the Australian Public Service (APS).

•    All applicants external to AWM that are offered employment will be required to successfully undergo a National Police Check, even if they currently hold a security clearance. The check is conducted in accordance with the Australian Government Protective Security Policy Framework requirements.
