About Blind Freddy's Café
Blind Freddy's Café is a well-established hospitality venue recognised for its quality dining experience and contemporary Australian cuisine. Operating seven days a week, we cater to a diverse clientele across breakfast, lunch, and all-day dining. Our menu focuses on fresh, made-to-order dishes crafted from locally sourced ingredients. The kitchen functions as a well-organised, collaborative environment where every team member contributes to consistency, efficiency, and high culinary standards. We are seeking a skilled and passionate Chef to join our culinary team and help us continue building our reputation for excellence.
Position Overview
Asa Chef at Blind Freddy's Café, you'll be responsible for planning, preparing, and presenting dishes that reflect our menu and uphold the standards our guests expect. You'll work closely with the Head Chef and management team to coordinate daily kitchen operations, maintain smooth service flow, and ensure each meal leaving the pass meets our quality expectations.
The role also involves mentoring and supervising cooks and kitchen assistants, providing hands-on training to maintain consistency across all food preparation and presentation. You'll contribute ideas for seasonal menus, oversee stock and ingredient quality, and ensure the kitchen remains a clean, organised, and efficient workspace that supports a consistently positive dining experience.
Key Responsibilities
The responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Assist in planning and creating seasonal menu items that reflect the café's fresh, flavour-driven style while keeping ingredient availability, customer preferences, and cost balance in mind.
- Prepare and cook a wide range of dishes to order, maintaining consistency in flavour, portion size, and presentation across all service periods.
- Take ownership of food quality from preparation to plating, ensuring every dish meets the café's standards before it reaches the customer.
- Oversee the day-to-day operations of the kitchen, coordinating with the Head Chef to manage prep lists, service flow, and smooth turnaround during busy periods.
- Supervise, train, and support cooks and kitchen hands, providing practical guidance on cooking methods, hygiene practices, and time management to help them build skill and confidence.
- Work closely with the Head Chef to plan ingredient requirements, place supplier orders, check deliveries, and manage stock rotation to minimise waste.
- Ensure all ingredients and prepared items are stored, labelled, and handled safely, maintaining freshness and compliance with health standards.
- Encourage teamwork and clear communication between kitchen and front-of-house staff to ensure quick, accurate, and professional service.
- Participate in menu reviews, staff briefings, and kitchen meetings to share feedback and continuously improve food quality and workflow.
- Maintain a clean, well-organised, and safe kitchen at all times, following proper sanitation procedures and upholding the café's commitment to quality and professionalism.
Key Requirements:
- Previous experience of at least more than a year as a Chef in a fast-paced café or restaurant environment.
- AQF Associate Degree, Advanced Diploma or Diploma in Hospitality Management or equivalent in a related field.
- Exceptional knowledge of culinary techniques, food preparation, and presentation.
- Strong leadership and communication skills to effectively manage the kitchen team.
- Expertise in food costing, menu planning, and inventory management.
- A keen eye for detail and a passion for creating high-quality food.
- Thorough understanding of food safety and hygiene regulations.
- Ability to work well under pressure and maintain high standards during busy periods.
- Flexible, adaptable, and open to new ideas and challenges.
Why Join Us?
- Be part of a creative and supportive team that values your contribution.
- Opportunity to work with fresh, local ingredients in a welcoming environment.
- Competitive salary and opportunities for professional growth and development.
