We're seeking a dynamic Shop Manager to lead our beloved Readings Kids shop in Carlton. Readings plays an important part in Australia's literary landscape and you will be working with the youngest readers in the country.

About this role

As Shop Manager of Readings Kids, you'll create a thriving, profitable bookshop that sparks imagination and fosters a lifelong love of reading in children and families. You'll own all aspects of shop operations while curating magical experiences that make every visit memorable for young readers and their families.

What you'll be responsible for:

  • Achieving financial targets while creating an enchanting, child-friendly shopping environment

  • Leading and developing a passionate team who share your love of children's literature

  • Building relationships with schools, families, and the local community

  • Curating book selections and creating displays that capture young imaginations

  • Hosting author events, storytimes, and activities that bring books to life

  • Ensuring exceptional customer experiences for children, parents, teachers, and carers

What we're looking for:

  • Passion for children's literature - you understand what makes great children's books and love sharing recommendations

  • 2-3 years retail management experience - preferably in books, or family-focused retail

  • Team leadership skills - you can inspire and develop others who work with families daily

  • Community engagement mindset - you enjoy building relationships with schools, libraries, and local families

  • Commercial acumen - you understand how to balance magic with profitable business operations

  • Excellent communication - you connect naturally with children, parents, and educators
