Compliance Systems and Data Analyst

APS5

Townsville, Cairns

Ongoing/Non-ongoing; Full-time

Applications close Thursday 6 November 2025, 11:59pm AEST

The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority (the Reef Authority) is a Commonwealth non-corporate entity, and a statutory agency established by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Act 1975 (Marine Park Act), reporting to the Minister for the Environment and Water. Our objective is the long-term protection, ecologically sustainable use, understanding and enjoyment of the Great Barrier Reef for all Australians and the international community through the care and development of the Marine Park.

Managing a reef roughly the size of Italy demands many skills and talents, so you don't have to be a marine biologist to contribute to our mission. From finance to marketing roles, we have a team almost as diverse as the ecosystem we protect. Our commitment and dedication to the Great Barrier Reef and the Australian public have a long-lasting impact, and we are looking for individuals who can bring their unique skills, experience, and knowledge to our high-performing and inclusive organisation.

The Position

We are seeking a systems and data analyst to work within the Compliance Planning team to develop and manage business systems and data that improve field management of the Marine Parks and Island National Parks for the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area. You will have skills in understanding data analysis solutions broadly. You will have experience in integrating technology solutions with business systems, data management and data visualisation.

You will have a focus on implementing and maintaining robust data management systems that keep the Reef Joint Field Management Program's compliance operations running effectively for example the Compliance Management System and the Field Reporting System. You will also assist in the software implementation and data management of innovative technology projects, for example vessel tracking systems, remote monitoring drone operations, artificial intelligence, satellite imagery and remotely operated cameras and radar systems. You will be able to consider how technology can augment staff capabilities to deliver efficiency gains.

To achieve this, you will need to work closely with colleagues in the Reef Authority, Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service and external collaborators and providers to deliver technology and business system improvements. You will further need to work with a cross section of Reef Joint Field Management Program staff to support the uptake and continued operability of technologies and business systems used by the Program.

About You

  • You are proficient in data architecture, integration and management, skilled in data analysis and interpretation.
  • You have an attention to detail in visual design and data accuracy.
  • You have experience with databases, data analysis, visualisation and reporting tools (e.g. SQL, Databricks, Power BI, Azure DevOps).
  • You have strong problem-solving skills and an ability to identify opportunities for system improvements.
  • Can effectively work across teams with differing levels of technical understanding to share knowledge and deliver aligned system and data solutions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and manage integrated data systems and architecture that supports the ongoing operability of compliance technologies and systems used by the Reef Joint Field Management Program.
  • Extract, transform, and analyse data from multiple sources to provide actionable insights and evidence-based recommendations to support strategic and operational goals.
  • Design, develop, and maintain interactive dashboards and reports that communicate key performance indicators to support Field Management Operations.
  • Act as a liaison between technical and operational teams to understand reporting, data management and software needs and facilitate technical solutions.
  • Identify opportunities to improve existing systems and support the implementation of new technologies or enhancements to increase efficiency, data quality and data management.
  • Provide advice and support the implementation of key initiatives, activities, and priority projects within the Program, or take responsibility for specific components of these projects as needed.
