We have a current opportunity for a
Systems Operation Engineer
, on a contract basis within the Defence sector. The role is based in
Canberra, ACT
. The contract is for an
initial 12 month period, with a 2 x 12 month extension option
.

The Systems Operation Engineer will be responsible for, but not limited to the following duties:

• Work with project managers, product owners, business analysts, solution architects and senior customers on the design of integrated ICT solutions that support organisational outcomes within the constraints of a technology roadmap;
• Provide engineering solutions that demonstrate awareness of dependencies and the need to collaborate and integrate with partner agencies and strategic industry partners;
• Lead the analysis of complex systems and apply engineering expertise to identify and recommend courses of action;
• Manage and monitor all installed systems and infrastructure;
• Install, configure, test and maintain operating systems, application software and system management tools;
• Escalate issues and seek advice from the Project Director and or System Owner or Engineering Manager in a timely manner;
• Contribute to external contract development including identification of approval and verification gates;
• Participate in the review of externally developed test plans and procedures to ensure integration with requirements and verification processes;
• Engage with relevant stakeholders in documentation development;
• Resolve issues and or problems that arise during the course of capability development projects;
• Monitor and test application performance for potential bottlenecks, identify possible solutions, and work with developers and other relevant stakeholders to implement those fixes;
• Ensure that the testing and handover of implemented solutions are conducted as per organisational standards, therefore reducing the risk and adverse impact of change;
• Assist in the continuous improvement process by developing and enhancing procedures and working cohesively and flexibly with the broader project team, key business partners and stakeholder groups.

Minimum mandatory requirements:

• AGSVA Security clearance
• Defence experience
• Extensive experience in Cloud Domain Solution Architecture capacity (AWS) across both infrastructure and application side of Cloud solution
• Demonstrated knowledge and skills in Amazon Web Services (AWS) services and in particular:
• Compute services (RHEL, Ubuntu and Windows Server)
• Storage & archival services
• Database services and replication methodologies
• Network & Content Delivery services and network connectivity options
• Migration services
• Management tools and services
• Security, Identity & Compliance services
• Analytics services
• Application Services
• Messaging services
• Desktop and App Streaming services.
• Demonstrated knowledge and skill in AWS security features and best practice
• Demonstrated knowledge and skill in AWS implementation for elasticity and scalability
• Demonstrated knowledge and skill in AWS self-healing techniques, fault-tolerant services and disaster recovery and fail-over strategies
• Demonstrated knowledge and skill in deployment and management within AWS
• Demonstrated knowledge and skill in general ICT including:
• large-scale distributed systems
• multi-tier architectures
• loose coupling
• system performance tuning
• network concepts
• RESTful web services, XML and JSON
• Information and application security concepts including public key encryption, remote access, access credentials, and certificate-based authentication
• Demonstrated knowledge and skill in cloud security, the risks, threats and protective measures and treatments that can be implemented.

Desirable requirements:

• Experience using and managing Hydrographic software such as CARIS
• Experience and understanding of Geospatial systems and technologies
• AWS certifications will be well regarded
• Working knowledge of the Australian Government Information Security Manual (ISM) and the ability to implement technical solutions that comply with ISM controls
