The Director, Internet Networks Engineering is a key strategic and technical leader, accountable for the design, deployment, and lifecycle management of Optus' Internet-facing infrastructure—including Internet Core, peering, transit, DDoS, edge routing, DNS, and CDN platforms. With the majority of Optus traffic reliant on these capabilities, the role is essential in ensuring flawless global connectivity, optimal routing, security, and high-performance access across broadband, mobile, and enterprise services. Managing a team of engineers and specialists, this role drives Internet strategy, develops peering and routing policies, and ensures engineering plans deliver against customer experience and business objectives, while aligning investments to long-term strategic priorities.
Your day in the life of Director, Internet Networks Engineering at Optus
- Set and implement strategy for Internet infrastructure (peering, transit, DNS, edge routing), driving network transformation, capacity growth, resiliency, and cost optimisation.
- Lead network transformation initiatives including IP modernization, DNS resilience, DDoS refresh
- Coordinate engineering plans and operations to ensure Internet-facing platforms deliver high performance, reliability, security, and seamless integration across broadband, enterprise, and mobile.
Lead routing and peering strategy, including policy development, DNS architecture, automation, and observability to improve efficiency and fault resolution.
Accountable for the performance, reliability, and security of Internet-facing platforms, ensuring continuous improvement in service quality.
Lead people and partners, mentoring Internet engineers, driving capability uplift, and managing vendor and peering partner relationships to align with technical and commercial objectives.
- Ensure compliance and innovation, meeting regulatory and security requirements while evaluating emerging technologies, promoting sustainability, and simplifying platform operations.
Your skills to pay the bills
- Relevant professional qualifications in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related field.
- Extensive hands-on experience in IP network engineering, including 5+ years in senior leadership, with a proven track record delivering sophisticated, multi-stream engineering projects.
- High level of technical expertise in advanced BGP routing, scalable DNS design, peering and transit strategies, Internet security (RPKI, DNSSEC, DDoS), observability tools, and experience with SRv6, automation frameworks (Netconf/YANG, Ansible), and cloud-native networking.
- Strong business awareness with experience drafting TCO models, business plans, and investment cases, balancing technical priorities with commercial outcomes.
- Skilled in building and mentoring high-performing teams, stakeholder management, and influencing across matrix environments.
- Outstanding communication, executive reporting, customer focus, problem-solving, and ability to operate under pressure while ensuring compliance with regulatory and industry standards.
