About the role
The primary role of an Aged Care Advocate is to assist older people and their representatives throughout New South Wales in exercising their rights by providing them with information, education and support. An Aged Care Advocate offers advocacy services to those who are receiving or seeking to receive aged care services and is responsible for providing information and educational sessions to aged care home residents, carers, staff of aged care services, health care professionals and other community organisations.
The ideal candidate should have a strong understanding of an advocate's role in ensuring access to quality care and services.

Role Responsibilities
As an Aged Care Advocate, you'll be responsible for:
- Listen to and help older people receiving or seeking to receive residential aged care services and/or their representatives make informed decisions via telephone and face to face support
- Advocate on behalf of older people receiving or seeking to receive residential aged care services to ensure their rights are upheld and responded to appropriately
- Advocate on behalf of clients in response to complaints against aged care service providers to have their concerns addressed
- Manage intake and advocacy cases using Salesforce database
- Refer clients to other services including the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission
- Provide education and information sessions to aged care recipients and aged care staff
- Assist in developing and maintaining appropriate information resources for clients
- Participate in seniors' events, information days, displays and exhibitions in the local area
- Contribute to promotional campaigns targeting identified priority groups
- Participate in the maintenance and development of local networks and relationships to promote Seniors Rights Service and expand its reach
- Contribute to identification and monitoring of systemic issues arising for people receiving or seeking to receive aged care services and/or their representatives
- Travel Intrastate for work as required
- Undertake other tasks as assigned by the manager.
Essential Criteria:
1. Degree or equivalent education in social work, psychology or related field
2. Sound knowledge and understanding of the aged care system in NSW and familiarity with community resources for additional support
3. Strong commitment to human rights, social justice and diversity
4. Experience engaging with people who have lived experience of trauma
5. Previous experience in applying advocacy that champions client voice and agency
6. Be willing to register and authenticate as an advocate agent for professional use of the My Aged Care online portal.
7. Demonstrated experience in planning and delivering workshops and presentations
8. Good interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills
9. Skills in negotiation, teamwork, conflict resolution, decision making and problem solving.
10. Understanding of ageism and how it effects older people and their rights
11. Excellent computer skills, fluent in Microsoft Office 365 and database management
12. Willing to use your own registered and comprehensively insured vehicle, where you will be reimbursed for work related mileage claims
13. Willingness to obtain an annual flu vaccination and hold a valid National Criminal History check and NSW driver's license as a condition of employment
