The Organisation

The Canberra Rape Crisis Centre (CRCC) is a non-government, feminist organisation working to eliminate sexual violence against women, young people, children and men. Our Mission is to be an active, visible catalyst for social change through the provision of high-quality services within a feminist framework.

We provide confidential counselling and practical support for victim survivors of sexual violence and their families who have experienced any form of sexual assault, sexual harassment or childhood sexual abuse.

We arrange immediate crisis appointments (Mon to Fri) and provide a 24-hour crisis callout service through the Forensic & Medical Sexual Assault Care (FAMSAC) and/or Sexual Assault & Child Abuse Team (SACAT) services.

Our Crisis phone support is available from 7am until 11pm, 7 days a week.

Job Summary:

The Crisis Counsellor Coordinator plays a key leadership role in managing CRCC's crisis response service. This position ensures the delivery of high-quality, trauma-informed crisis support, therapeutic counselling, and advocacy for survivors of sexual violence and their non-offending supporters.

The Coordinator provides supervision and mentoring to the Crisis Counsellor team, oversees rosters and callouts, supports staff wellbeing, and ensures service delivery aligns with best practice and CRCC's feminist principles. The role also involves direct client support, stakeholder collaboration, administrative responsibilities and contributing to organisational planning and reporting.

Key Responsibilities
  • Coordinate and manage the Crisis Counsellor team, including rosters, workload allocation, and workflow monitoring.
  • Provide clinical supervision, mentoring, and debriefing support to Crisis Counsellor Advocates.
  • Foster a positive, supportive team culture, with emphasis on wellbeing and reflective practice.
  • Facilitate team meetings, case discussions, and crisis debriefings.
  • Support staff development through training, feedback, and professional growth opportunities.

  • Ensure the effective delivery of trauma-informed, client-led crisis support and counselling.

  • Oversee and participate in the crisis roster for telephone intervention, callouts to police/medical/forensic services, and after-hours response.
  • Provide direct counselling, information, advocacy, and support to survivors and their families.
  • Support clients in navigating systems such as health, legal, housing, and justice.
  • Monitor client intake, waitlist, and ensure timely and accessible services.

  • Contribute to planning, review, and continuous improvement of crisis response and counselling services.

  • Monitor service data, evaluate outcomes, and report on program performance.
  • Assist in the development of policies, procedures, and best practice frameworks.
  • Ensure compliance with safeguarding, child protection, and risk assessment procedures.
  • Contribute to CRCC's education, training, and community engagement initiatives.

  • Build strong working relationships with external agencies (police, health, legal, housing, etc.).

  • Advocate for clients' needs within systems and with service providers.
  • Represent CRCC in relevant forums, networks, and community initiatives.
Key Selection Criteria
Essential
  • Demonstrated experience in crisis intervention, counselling, and trauma-informed practice.
  • Experience leading or coordinating a team in a therapeutic, advocacy, or crisis setting.
  • Strong understanding of the dynamics and impacts of sexual violence.
  • Proven ability to manage competing demands, rosters, and service delivery priorities.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to provide supervision and support staff wellbeing.
  • Strong organisational skills, record keeping, and attention to detail.
  • Commitment to feminist principles, social justice, and working within a human rights framework.
  • Ability to work respectfully with diverse communities and individuals with lived experience.
Desirable
  • Previous leadership experience within a feminist, community-based, or trauma service.
  • Knowledge of ACT service systems and referral pathways.
  • Experience in facilitation of group programs, training, or education.
  • Experience with data analysis and outcomes-focused reporting.
Qualifications
  • Tertiary qualifications in Social Work, Psychology, Counselling, or related fields.
  • Minimum 3–5 years' experience in counselling, crisis, or trauma-related services.
  • Current Working with Vulnerable People (WWVP) Registration (ACT).
  • Current Driver's Licence.
