Parramatta, New South Wales, Australia New South Lawyers Full time $90,000 - $120,000 per year

Join a firm where your expertise in costs matters – and your career will soar.

At New South Lawyers, we're all about delivering outstanding legal outcomes, fostering a people-focused culture, and championing legal excellence. We're looking for talented professionals to join our growing Sydney team in either of the following roles:

  • Costs Lawyer / Costs Consultant / Legal Costs Assessor (full-time, part-time, or temporary/contractual basis)
  • Assistant Costs Lawyer (Full-time)

Position 1: Costs Lawyer / Costs Consultant / Legal Costs Assessor

This is a rare opportunity to take full ownership of costs matters across our NSW practice and make a meaningful impact within a supportive, high-performing environment.

This is predominantly an in-house counsel role (approximately 90%), where you'll handle legal work for the firm itself, with a small portion of your workload involving cost matters for external clients.

What you'll be doing:

  • Managing your own costs files from start to finish, including drafting and preparing detailed cost statements and bills of costs for party-party and solicitor-client assessments or taxations
  • Preparing applications for assessment or review of ordered costs and solicitor-client assessments
  • Negotiating and settling costs matters with clients and opposing parties
  • Representing and advising clients in costs-related proceedings and appearing in court as required
  • Providing expert advice, guidance, and training to solicitors and clients on costs law, procedure, and compliance

What you bring:

  • A minimum of 2+ years' experience as a Costs Lawyer, Legal Costs Consultant, or Costs Assessor (more senior candidates welcome)
  • Strong knowledge of costs law, including the Uniform Civil Procedure Rules (UCPR), Legal Profession Uniform Law (NSW), and relevant case law
  • Proven ability to manage costs matters autonomously in a fast-paced environment
  • Exceptional analytical, communication, advocacy, and time-management skills
  • A results-driven mindset and hunger to grow your career with a firm committed to your professional development

Position 2: Assistant Costs Lawyer

This role offers an excellent opportunity for an early-career lawyer or costs professional to gain hands-on experience and develop expertise in legal costing under the guidance of senior practitioners. You'll work closely with our Costs Lawyers to deliver accurate, high-quality work while learning the finer details of costs law in a supportive and collaborative team.

What you'll be doing:

  • Assisting in the preparation and review of bills of costs, cost statements, and submissions for assessment
  • Supporting the drafting of correspondence, court documents, and settlement proposals
  • Conducting legal research into costs law, rules, and recent case developments
  • Liaising with clients, solicitors, and external assessors to gather information and ensure deadlines are met
  • Providing general administrative and procedural support to senior Costs Lawyers and the broader legal team

What you bring:

  • 1+ year of experience in a law firm, costs consultancy, or related legal role (graduates with strong attention to detail are encouraged to apply)
  • Sound understanding or keen interest in costs law and legal billing procedures
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with excellent attention to detail
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and maintain accuracy under pressure
  • A proactive attitude, willingness to learn, and genuine interest in developing a career in costs law

Why New South Lawyers?

We're more than a law firm – we're a collaborative, future-focused team helping clients navigate complexity with confidence. You'll enjoy:

  • A pivotal, highly valued role within a respected legal practice
  • Flexible work options and life-friendly arrangements including WFH
  • Modern IT systems and a paperless office
  • Paid parental leave of up to 8 weeks
  • A vibrant, inclusive culture where diversity is celebrated
  • Career progression, mentorship, and continuous professional development

Take this chance to be part of a firm that values your expertise, rewards initiative, and supports your long-term growth.
