Head of Sport
- Support high-performance student athletes in both academic and sporting pursuits
- Develop and maintain high-quality, inclusive, and sustainable sports facilities across all regional campuses
- Full time, ongoing role based in Hobart
About the opportunity
The Head of Sport is a senior leadership position within the Academic Division, tasked with driving the University Sport Strategy (2026–2030) to support the ambitions of the University Strategic Plan 2025 Refresh. Sport is positioned as a key enabler of equity, connection, and student success, contributing to Tasmania's wellbeing and global impact. Reporting to the Pro Vice-Chancellor, Campus Life, this role provides strategic leadership to deliver high-quality, safe, and inclusive sport services and facilities that foster belonging and wellbeing across campuses and communities. It also involves representing the University on national forums and advising leadership on sport, health, and wellbeing initiatives.
Beyond strategic oversight, the Head of Sport manages a commercially viable, risk-controlled sports business model, encompassing human resources, financial and asset management, and governance across multiple facilities. Operating in a 24/7 environment with public access and commercial activity, the role demands autonomy, sound judgment, and readiness to respond to critical incidents, including out-of-hours commitments. Collaboration with Campus Services, People & Wellbeing, and other teams ensures compliance with policies, procedures, and legislation, while maintaining a strong focus on safety, inclusivity, and operational excellence.
What you'll do:
- Enhance student and staff wellbeing through increased participation in physical activity and support high-performance student athletes in both academic and sporting pursuits.
- Develop and maintain high-quality, inclusive, and sustainable sports facilities across all regional campuses, and oversee safe, multi-site sport operations with a focus on continuous improvement and service excellence.
- Build strategic partnerships with public and private organisations to strengthen community pathways and impact, and represent the University at external forums including UniSport, government agencies, and national sport bodies.
- Lead a positive and high-performing team culture through inspiring leadership, capability frameworks, and professional development.
What we're looking for:
- Extensive leadership experience including enterprise-level strategy development and implementation, and leading large teams to successfully manage significant physical, financial and staffing resources in a high-risk environment.
- Experience in leading and managing complex, geographically distributed indoor and outdoor sporting facilities and commercial operations, including managing safety, compliance, risks and response to critical incidents.
- Extensive experience in negotiation and dispute resolution in relation to complex contractual and sensitive issues, including dealing with grievances and disputes.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, with particular emphasis on attention to detail and clarity of communication.
- Demonstrated customer/student service orientation and ability to build and maintain effective relationships with a diverse range of people, as well as proven ability to work constructively as a member of a management team with a commitment to the provision of high-quality services.
