About This Opportunity 

Join a world-class research environment at The University of Queensland as a Research Fellow or Senior Research Fellow supporting the Physical and Mental Health Stream at the Queensland Centre for Mental Health Research (QCMHR). This role offers the opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research focused on improving outcomes for individuals with psychosis, particularly those affected by physical health comorbidities such as those associated with schizophrenia. The team is actively engaged in psychiatric epidemiology, randomised controlled trials, observational studies, and evidence synthesis and guideline development, providing a rich, collaborative setting for impactful work.

In this role, you'll apply your expertise in quantitative research methodologies to lead and support high-quality data analysis, contribute to manuscript preparation, and supervise Honour and Higher Degree by Research students, as well as psychiatry registrars undertaking scholarly projects. You'll be central to research into psychosis, exploring both physical health outcomes and the impact of compulsory community treatment, with the aim of building a nationally recognised research profile in this critical area. You will also contribute to service and engagement activities within the Centre and the broader UQ community. This position is ideal for a motivated researcher with a background in mental health or relevant experience, seeking to grow their impact in a leading research institution known for shaping the future.

Key responsibilities will include: 

  • Deliver high-quality research by contributing statistical expertise to psychiatric epidemiological studies, analysing large datasets, publishing in leading journals, and advancing the Physical and Mental Health Stream's research agenda, including evidence synthesis and guideline development.

  • Drive research collaboration and funding through joint project development, supervision of students and psychiatry registrars, and active involvement in securing and managing competitive external research funding.

  • Contribute to academic leadership and teaching by supervising Honours and Higher Degree by Research students, supporting staff development, and delivering high-quality teaching and mentorship in line with UQ's educational standards.

  • Engage in service, leadership and partnerships by supporting internal operations and governance, fostering external relationships with government and industry, and actively promoting UQ's values through collaborative service and community engagement.

Organisational Relationships

The position reports to lead of the Physical Mental Health Stream of QCMHR, School of Clinical Medicine.

About You 
  • Completion of a PhD in the discipline area (psychiatry, psychology, pharmacy, social sciences, biostatistics, or other relevant area).

  • Demonstrated experience in the analysis and/or reporting of clinical data from clinical trials or observational studies with knowledge of key statistical packages e.g. SPSS, STATA, R, Excel

  • A developing reputation and track record of publications in reputed refereed journals and presenting at conferences.

  • Flexibility and ability to think strategically, responding to new developments in the field by considering their impact on the current research program, moving quickly to change practices or take new directions when indicated.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with scientific peers, funders, and other stakeholders.

  • Ability to work both independently (with limited supervision) and collaboratively with team members.

  • Experience in writing external funding applications or ethics applications.

  • Knowledge of mental health research and/or physical comorbidity research is desirable
