Pathology Queensland are looking for a Chemist - Senior to join their team in Public and Environmental Health. In this role you will lead a small team to deliver cost-effective and quality analytical and advisory service in both phycology (phytoplankton identification and enumeration) and organic residues analysis in environmental, water, and biological samples in line with policies, guidelines and strategies.

What you'll do

  • Apply independent judgement and accountability in coordinating and maintaining workflows in a small team for the provision of phycology and trace organic residue analysis from water, environmental and biological matrices in line with quality requirements.
  • Provide guidance, training and leadership to staff and to work effectively as a member of a team to meet client requirements.
  • Initiate research and development projects and collaborate with external groups to develop, expand, and update procedures and methods to broaden the team's knowledge, analytical expertise and capability.
  • Provide high level verbal and written scientific advice, expert witness and presentations to managers, government agencies, clients, committees and at conferences. Advise on service needs and initiatives to improve service quality and contribute to the strategic direction of Organic Chemistry.
  • Provide expert independent scientific judgement and problem-solving skills, including expert evidence in court, and advice to government agencies and committees.

About you

We are searching for someone who has:

  • Demonstrated, or the ability to rapidly acquire, high level knowledge and leadership in:
  • organic residue analysis using various sample extraction and clean-up techniques for analysis by liquid and gas chromatography techniques.
  • the identification and enumeration of algae.
  • High level knowledge and problem-solving skills with an ability to adapt, research and develop methodologies to expand the laboratory's capability and capacity, with a proactive and enthusiastic approach to the application and adoption of new techniques.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide expert scientific advice to line managers, clients, and other stakeholders including the judicial system.
  • Knowledge of the legislative requirements of waters analysis including familiarity with ADWG, ANZECC water quality guidelines, Environmental Protection Act, Water Act, Water Supply (Safety and Reliability) Act, Guidelines for managing risks in Recreational Water, Environmental Protection Act, Public Health Act, Food Act and Biosecurity Act.
  • A degree level qualification in science with a major in chemistry or related major from a recognised university, or equivalent as determined by the Deputy Director General or delegate is mandatory.
