The role

We are seeking a detail-oriented and community-minded Environmental Health Officer to join our Regulatory Services team on a temporary full-time basis until 30 October 2026 (maternity leave cover). In this pivotal role, you will oversee public health and safety across our city by regulating food premises, managing environmental and contamination issues, and ensuring compliance with relevant legislation. This position provides an excellent opportunity to contribute to the wellbeing of over 380,000 residents through frontline regulatory action and education.

Duties will include but not be limited to:

• Inspect and regulate food premises, public pools, and skin penetration businesses

• Assess Development Applications in relation to health and environmental risks

• Monitor, investigate and respond to public health complaints and pollution incidents

• Enforce compliance under the Food Act, Public Health Act, POEO Act and others

• Provide advice on contaminated land and underground petroleum storage systems

• Liaise with stakeholders such as NSW Food Authority and environmental consultants

• Prepare court briefs and attend hearings where required

• Represent Council at public meetings and panels

You will have

• Bachelor Degree in Environmental Health or equivalent (as accredited by Environmental Health Australia)

• Relevant experience in public/environmental health and compliance

• Strong understanding of key legislation including Local Government Act, Food Act, Public Health Act, POEO Act, etc.

• Strong judgement, decision-making, and time management abilities

• Excellent conflict resolution, mediation, and interpersonal skills

• A current Class C driver's licence

The salary for this opportunity starts at $93, Grade G, Step 1) plus 12% super.
