About the Role:

Western Health is seeking a dedicated and experienced Chemical Safety Coordinator to join our Safety, Risk & Emergency Management team on a 12-month contract. This pivotal role ensures the safe management of hazardous chemicals across all Western Health facilities, supporting a safe environment for patients, staff, and visitors.

You will lead the development and implementation of chemical safety protocols, conduct risk assessments, manage compliance with legislation, and deliver training to staff. This is a fantastic opportunity to make a meaningful impact in a dynamic healthcare setting.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and maintain chemical safety programs and procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with OHS, EPA, and Dangerous Goods regulations.
  • Maintain chemical inventories, manifests, and Safety Data Sheets (SDS).
  • Conduct chemical risk assessments and incident investigations.
  • Coordinate emergency response and chemical spill procedures.
  • Deliver training and promote chemical safety awareness.
  • Liaise with regulatory bodies and support audits and inspections.
  • Collaborate with departments such as Pharmacy, Pathology, Engineering, and Infection Prevention.

About You:

Essential:

  • Tertiary qualification in Chemistry, OHS, Environmental Science, or related field.
  • Experience in chemical safety management in healthcare or laboratory settings.
  • Strong knowledge of WHS, EPA, and Dangerous Goods legislation.
  • Excellent communication and training skills.
  • Proficiency in risk assessment and incident reporting.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Collaborative and team-oriented approach.

Desirable:

  • Certification in hazardous materials or chemical safety (e.g., CCSP).
  • Experience with ISO 9001 or similar quality systems.
  • Understanding of sustainability and waste management practices.
