The Mornington Shire Council provides a range of services to twenty-three islands of the Wellesley Group in the Gulf of Carpentaria, in the State of Queensland. Mornington island is the largest island in the group with the main township of Gununa, housing most of the population. Mornington island is located 125kms north-west of Burketown, 200kms west of Karumba and 444kms from Mount Isa.

Key Responsibilities:
Financial Operations Management:
- Coordinate day-to-day financial operations, including accounts receivable, grant accounting and banking activities.
- Ensure timely and accurate processing of financial transactions.
Budgeting and Forecasting:
- Assist in the preparation, monitoring, and management of budgets.
- Provide support in financial forecasting and analysis to aid decision-making.
Financial Reporting:
- Assist in preparing and review financial reports, including monthly, quarterly, and annual statements.
- Ensure compliance with accounting standards and organisational policies.
Compliance and Audit:
- Ensure compliance with relevant financial regulations, policies, and procedures.
- Assist with internal and external audits, providing necessary documentation and support.
Process Improvement:
- Identify opportunities to improve financial processes and systems.
- Implement best practices to enhance efficiency and accuracy in financial operations.
Stakeholder Engagement:
- Liaise with internal departments, external vendors, and stakeholders to resolve financial issues.
- Provide financial advice and support to staff and management as required.
Data Management:
- Maintain accurate financial records and ensure data integrity.
- Oversee the use of financial software and systems, ensuring they are up-to-date and functioning effectively.
Team Coordination:
- Supervise and support finance team members, ensuring tasks are completed accurately and on time.
- Provide training and guidance to staff on financial policies and procedures.
Key Skills and Competencies:
- Strong knowledge of accounting principles and financial management.
- Proficiency in financial software ( Xero or similar) and Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel.
- Excellent organisational and time-management skills.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- High attention to detail and accuracy.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
Qualifications and Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
- 5 years of experience in a financial coordination or similar role.
- Experience in budget management, financial reporting, and compliance.
- Knowledge of relevant financial regulations and standards (e.g., Australian Accounting Standards, GST, payroll tax).
Desirable Attributes:
- Experience in the public sector or not-for-profit organisations.
- Familiarity with Queensland Government financial policies and procedures (if applicable).
- Certification such as CPA or CA (or working towards it) is highly regarded.
Work Environment:
Office-based role with occasional travel for meetings or training.
May involve working under tight deadlines, especially during reporting periods.
