The opportunity
The Social Planning and Policy Officer plays a pivotal role in advancing community health and wellbeing across Hobsons Bay, by developing and implementing strategic policies that address social issues such as alcohol and gambling harm. Working within the Strategy, Economy and Sustainability department, this fixed-term position collaborates with internal teams, government agencies, and community organisations to deliver evidence-based initiatives, advocate for legislative reform, and build capacity across Council and local networks.
What you'll be doing
- Finalise and deliver Council's Alcohol Harm Prevention Policy and lead implementation of the Gambling Harm Prevention Policy Statement.
- Support the development, monitoring, and reporting of the Community Health, Wellbeing and Safety Plan.
- Conduct research and analysis to inform policy development and advocacy on emerging social issues.
- Build partnerships with internal teams, government agencies, and community organisations to support healthy environments.
- Lead and support advocacy efforts for funding and legislative reform at state and federal levels.
- Facilitate engagement activities and awareness campaigns to address key social issues affecting Hobsons Bay communities
What you'll need to succeed
- Tertiary qualifications in social sciences, health studies or relevant field.
- Relevant local government experience, Social Planning, Community Development, Community Engagement preferred.
- Strong understanding of health equity, social determinants of health, and community capacity-building strategies.
- Proven ability to develop, implement, and evaluate social plans and policies, supported by excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Demonstrated problem-solving, judgement, and leadership abilities, with a proactive and collaborative approach to influencing social change.
