Who We Need

We're seeking a skilled and driven Associate-level Patent Attorney, based in Sydney, with a background in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or Physics to join our team of experienced professionals. You'll work across a broad spectrum of technical fields including mechanical engineering, mechatronics, mechanical devices, automotive engineering, structural and civil engineering, fluid mechanics, materials, chemical and process engineering.

In this role, you'll bring your technical acumen and strategic mindset to support complex matters and contribute to ongoing client success. You'll have the opportunity to build strong client relationships and collaborate with cross-functional teams on both legal matters and business development initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Drafting patent specifications: assisting senior staff in client meetings, reviewing and construing technical materials and patent documents received from client, writing patent claims and detailed description;
  • Prosecuting patent applications to grant: clearly articulating to clients the objections raised by the Australian and international patent offices, amending patent documents and/or preparing arguments with a view to progressing a patent application through to grant having regard to the client's commercial and strategic needs;
  • IP strategy: working with senior staff to strategize commercial outcomes for clients, assisting with freedom to operate review and opinion, providing novelty, infringement or validity opinions;
  • Team work: collaborating with law group and other multi-disciplinary teams, litigation support, referring work, reviewing searches with search teams;
  • Business development: writing articles, attending industry events, co-presenting with senior staff at industry and client events; and
  • Contributing to the firm: providing guidance and mentoring to Trainee Attorneys and assisting with the running of patent practice meetings.

About You

Qualifications & Experience

  • An Engineering degree from a reputable university;
  • Registered as a Patent Attorney; and
  • A minimum of four years' experience working in a patent practice.

  • Good technical skills with developing specialist expertise and autonomy in handling matters;
  • Able to manage workflow and WIP/debtors/billings;
  • Proven ability to develop and maintain good client relationships;
  • Demonstrates a client-centric approach – understands clients' needs and motivations, develops commercial solutions to issues, communicates clearly and responds promptly;
  • Able to engage in business development and marketing activities with guidance from senior team members;
  • Personable with an engaging style and ability to form strong relationships with a range of people;
  • Enjoys working in a team but is also able to work independently;
  • Drive to achieve results and a commitment to continuous improvement and growth;
  • Displays energy and enthusiasm for their work;
