About the Role The Media Advisor enhances Macquarie University's visibility and impact through strategic media engagement, compelling storytelling, and strong journalist relationships, contributing to reputation management and staff media capability. Key Accountabilities Proactively pitch media opportunities highlighting achievements of staff, students, alumni, and the University communityCollaborate with stakeholders to identify stories aligned with media trends and strategic prioritiesBuild strong relationships with media outlets and journalists, ensuring timely responses and after-hours media hotline supportWrite and tailor media releases and Lighthouse articles to diverse audiences, showcasing research, teaching, and impactSupport editorial decisions to prioritise stories based on stakeholder and media relevanceHelp lead media training programs and develop resources to enhance staff media engagement skillsMonitor media coverage and evaluate effectiveness of media strategies and releasesTrack and measure media release performance to ensure maximum coverage and impactSupport media response during crises or sensitive issues to protect the University's reputationEnsure compliance with EEO and WHS regulationsPerform other duties as required within the scope of the roleHow To Apply To express your interest in this position, please submit a statement of no more than 2 pages outlining your suitability for the role, by addressing the selection criteria outlined below, and your Resume. Selection Criteria: Extensive experience in media relations, journalism, or communications, ideally within complex or knowledge-rich organisations such as the higher education or public sector.Exceptional storytelling skills - visual, written, and video - with a deep understanding of how to tailor content for different audiences and platforms.Outstanding writing, editing, and proofreading skills, with the ability to craft compelling narratives, media releases, speeches, and executive communications that resonate with diverse audiences.Demonstrated success in building relationships with journalists, securing media coverage, and managing media engagement across platforms.Experience in developing and delivering media training programs or workshops for spokespeople and senior leaders.Proven experience in high-level issues management, including sensitive communications advice and crisis response in national or international organisations, combined with strong understanding of strategic communications, media relations, and the role of media in reputation management.High attention to detail, strong organisational and time management skills to effectively manage competing priorities, and excellent interpersonal and stakeholder engagement with success in building effective relationships and influencing at all levels.Proficiency in using media monitoring tools, content management systems, and digital publishing platforms.Use if advertising internally/externally - A genuine interest in higher education, with the ability to understand and communicate the University's core values, research impact, and societal contributions.For enquiries, please contact: James Giggacher - Director of Communications - Group Marketing - Closing Date: Wednesday 19th of November 2025 at 11:59pm (AEST).
