For more than 40 years, the North Qld Export Terminal, located at the Port of Abbot Point, has demonstrated its commitment to safety, efficiency, responsibility, and partnership with the local community.

APO has been contracted by North Queensland Export Terminal Pty Ltd to manage operations of its coal export terminal at the Port of Abbot Point—Australia's northernmost coal port—located 25 kilometres north of Bowen, between Townsville and Mackay, serving as the gateway to the Whitsundays.

Abbot Point Operations has an exciting opportunity for a Health and Safety Officer to join our team. We're looking for someone proactive and passionate about safety, ready to make a real difference on the ground. In this role, you'll take a hands-on approach to delivering key health and safety services while supporting the continuous improvement of our safety systems. Working closely with the HSEC Manager and HS Coordinators, you'll help ensure our operations remain safe, efficient, and sustainable for everyone involved.

What You'll Do:

  • Lead by example and model expected safety behaviours across the business
  • Oversee and support the safe delivery of services by HS contractors
  • Conduct inspections and audits, ensuring safety systems are followed and documented
  • Provide HS advice during contractor onboarding, including work authorisation, emergency response and incident investigation processes
  • Assist with tender evaluations, including reviewing HS management plans and participating in tender site visits
  • Contribute to improvements in department business plans and safety processes
  • Support the HSEC Manager with maintaining positive stakeholder relationships.

What We're Looking For:

  • Proven experience in a health and safety role, ideally in a heavy industry, terminal or mining environment
  • Strong knowledge of HS systems, audit processes, and regulatory compliance
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
  • Ability to influence safety culture through leadership and collaboration
  • Qualifications in Health and Safety or a related discipline
  • Experience with contractor management and onboarding processes is desirable
