Park Orchards Primary School was established in 1962 and set in Melbourne¿s outer east in a green environment surrounded by native vegetation and the remains of a pine plantation. The school is on the BARR (Bushfire at Risk Register). The area is well established, with substantial homes built on large blocks of land and extensive parklands.
The school¿s enrolment has remained between the students over the past four years. The population has become culturally more diverse with families coming from a variety of cultural backgrounds.
Teachers work in year level teams and an established model of junior and senior school supported professional learning and collaborative planning through teamwork. The Principal and Assistant Principal are responsible for the leadership of the school and are supported by Leading Teachers. Educational support and administrative staff compliment the work of the teachers and leadership. In 2024 the school operates with sixteen class groups and students are grouped in single and multi-age year levels.
The school facilities include the original two classroom wings with a free-standing library, a basketball stadium, an Arts Centre and one portable which accommodates two classrooms. The facilities provide for implementation of the curriculum and for many opportunities for after-hours activities. The basketball stadium is used both by the school and by the wider community; the school co-manages the facility with Manningham Council and Aligned Leisure. The Arts Centre contains an art room, music room, performance hall, kitchen and foyer. The Arts Centre is regularly used by a variety of community groups to conduct ballet, karate and yoga classes. The school also has a science room and two medium sized group-teaching areas, one in each classroom block. All classrooms have access to laptops, iPads and Interactive Whiteboards or LCD Smart TVs. The school grounds provide extensive play areas and gardens, which support active, imaginative and passive play. A hen house, vegetable garden and small orchard support the cooking program and sustainability focus of the school.
The school curriculum has an emphasis on developing each student¿s literacy and numeracy skills and personal and interpersonal learning, with student wellbeing underpinning all. The Victorian Curriculum is referenced when developing all teaching and learning programs and covers the dimensions of English, Mathematics, Science, Geography, History, The Arts (Visual and Performing), LOTE (Mandarin) and Health and Physical Education. Extra-curricular programs include interschool sport, camping, gardening, cooking, a variety of music tuition programs, choirs, and band. Parents work in partnership with teachers and support staff to achieve school goals and improve the learning environment for all students.
