Primary objective

Provide high-level strategic leadership, policy direction and stakeholder engagement to support the Northern Territory Government's plan

to revitalise economic growth and improve the quality of life for all Territorians. The Director, Future Industries is responsible for the

development and implementation of strategies and initiatives that grow the Northern Territory's capabilities in advanced manufacturing,

space, technology, AI and other rapid growth sectors.

Context statement

The role will position the Northern Territory as a national and regional hub for investment in advanced technologies, strengthen

engagement with key partners, and contribute to creating a sustainable and diversified workforce for the Territory.

Key duties and responsibilities

1. Provide strategic leadership in identifying, developing and promoting future industry opportunities, ensuring alignment with

government priorities and strategies.

  1. Lead the design, delivery and evaluation of policies and programs that support innovation, the development of rapid growth and

enabling industries, and investment attraction.

  1. Build and maintain strong collaborative relationships with industry, investors, research organisations, and government stakeholders

at the Territory, national and international levels.

  1. Drive investment through research and development in collaboration with partners, including in Asia.

  2. Provide authoritative and evidence-based advice to the Minister, and senior executives on emerging industry opportunities, risks

and required policy or reform.

  1. Lead and manage a small multidisciplinary team.

  2. Represent the Northern Territory Government in national forums, intergovernmental processes and industry networks to advance

the Territory's interests.

  1. Ensure sound governance, accountability and performance frameworks are in place to support effective program delivery and the

achievement of government objectives.

Selection criteria

Essential

1. Demonstrated capacity to provide strategic leadership in complex and emerging industry sectors, including the ability to develop and

implement policy and program frameworks that deliver measurable economic outcomes.

  1. Proven experience in investment attraction, industry development and stakeholder engagement.
  2. A sound understanding of Australia's economic relationships in the region and the Northern Territory's strategic positioning.
  3. Highly developed negotiation, communication and representational skills, with the ability to influence stakeholders and build strong

partnerships across government, industry, research institutions and Indigenous enterprises.

  1. Strong analytical and problem-solving ability, including the capacity to provide clear, evidence-based advice on industry

opportunities, risks and pathways.

  1. Demonstrated leadership and management capability, including experience building high-performing teams, leading change and

delivering results in complex and dynamic environments.

  1. High-level written and verbal communication skills, including experience in preparing ministerial briefings, Cabinet submissions and

reports for senior executives.

  1. Demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity and workplace health and safety.

Desirable

1. Relevant tertiary qualifications in business, economics, science or related disciplines.

  1. Experience in research commercialisation or venture investment.
