Job Summary:
We are seeking a skilled National Water Treatment Engineer to design, deliver, and support temporary and semi-permanent water treatment systems across Australia. Working closely with sales, engineering, and operations teams, you will contribute to project scoping, system design, costing, and on-site optimisation. This role blends technical expertise with commercial insight to ensure successful project outcomes nationwide.
Key Responsibilities:
Design & Engineering
- Lead the design, sizing, and commissioning of temporary, semi-permanent, and mobile water treatment systems, particularly for construction, mining, oil & gas, and emergency response sectors.
- Interpret and apply P&IDs, process flow diagrams, and hydraulic calculations to ensure systems are fit-for-purpose and compliant with project requirements.
- Oversee engineering activities including design validation, performance reviews, and optimisation of treatment systems.
- Apply strong knowledge of local water quality standards (e.g., ADWG, EPA) and ensure regulatory compliance throughout project lifecycle.
Operations & Troubleshooting
- Support operations and water treatment teams with system troubleshooting, performance testing, fault-finding, and ongoing optimisation across varied site conditions.
- Maintain hands-on involvement with pumps, tanks, membranes, valves, dosing systems, sensors, and field instrumentation.
- Utilise SCADA/PLC systems, remote monitoring, and water chemistry testing to support system performance and integrity.
- Operate confidently in remote, industrial, and construction environments, meeting tight deadlines and adapting to challenging conditions.
Safety & Risk Management
- Implement HAZOPs, SWMS, and safety plans relevant to temporary and mobile water treatment systems.
- Apply risk management principles in both design and operational contexts to safeguard compliance and site safety.
Commercial & Client Support
- Collaborate with Sales, Estimating, and Engineering teams to scope, cost, and deliver commercially viable water treatment solutions.
- Provide technical support and advice to clients, tailoring solutions to meet equipment capabilities and commercial constraints.
- Understand rental/hire operations including equipment setup, commissioning, demobilisation, rental pricing, SLAs, and service contracts within the hire sector.
Communication & Collaboration
- Liaise effectively with clients to explain technical concepts and resolve site-based queries promptly.
- Work cross-functionally with sales, operations, and field service teams to align engineering outcomes with business goals and customer expectations.
- Facilitate stakeholder engagement and contribute to team collaboration, including informal people management.
Problem Solving & Project Management
- Deliver innovative, cost-effective treatment solutions through strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Manage technical priorities while balancing project performance, risk, and value outcomes to ensure successful delivery.
Requirements
Education/Certificates
- Bachelor of Engineering (Environmental Engineering or related discipline) or equivalent qualification.
- Relevant certifications or formal training in water treatment systems, process engineering, commissioning, or project management.
- Ongoing professional development in water treatment technologies, regulatory compliance, and field commissioning.
Experience & Knowledge
Water Treatment System & Process Engineering
5–10 years' experience in the design, operation, and maintenance of water and wastewater treatment systems
Skilled in sizing, designing, and optimising treatment systems, with practical experience in temporary or mobile plant setups—particularly within construction, mining, oil & gas, or emergency response environments.
Proficient in reading and applying P&IDs, process flow diagrams, and performing hydraulic calculations.
Equipment, Commissioning & Troubleshooting
Hands-on experience with pumps, tanks, membranes, valves, dosing systems, sensors, and field instrumentation.
Experienced in system commissioning, performance testing, fault-finding, and optimisation across various site conditions.
Familiarity with SCADA/PLC systems, remote monitoring tools, and water chemistry testing.
Comfortable operating in remote, industrial, and construction environments under time-sensitive conditions.
Regulatory, Safety & Risk Management
Solid understanding of local water quality standards (e.g., ADWG, EPA, industrial discharge regulations).
Knowledge of HAZOPs, SWMS, and safety planning relevant to temporary and mobile water treatment systems.
Demonstrated ability to apply risk management principles in both design and operational contexts.
Commercial Awareness & Hire Industry
Strong knowledge of hire/rental operations, including equipment setup, commissioning, and demobilisation for both short- and long-term deployments.
Understanding of rental pricing structures, service level expectations, margins, and the commercial impact of engineering decisions.
Familiarity with service contracts, SLAs, and operational models within the hire sector.
Client- Focused Delivery & Communication
Proven ability to tailor technical solutions to meet client needs within equipment and commercial constraints.
Strong communication skills to liaise effectively with clients, explain technical concepts, and respond to site-based queries.
Experienced in collaborating with internal sales, operations, and field service teams in a fast-paced, customer-driven environment.
Analytical, Project & People Skills
Strong problem-solving skills, with a focus on innovation and delivering robust, cost-effective treatment solutions.
